2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Frank Seravalli has more details on how the bubbles will operate. Single rooms, no entering other rooms, etc. The roster is 31, not 30 players. Clubs can bring a maximum of 52 people including players, coaches and assorted staff, ownership, etc. Each team must have a physician, a security officer, a designated compliance officer and a social media member/content creator.

The return to play plan and Memorandum of Understanding on the new CBA is complete. The Board of Governors and NHLPA must still vote on it.

Saw a Kinetico truck. I think Peters will have to go to the AHL or maybe Europe to coach. He could even end up in the ECHL. Junior hockey won't hire him unless it's as an assistant.

He already has a job, he was hired by Yekaterinburg in the KHL.

Comprehensive overview of the new labor deal from Frank Seravalli of TSN...

IMO, Seravalli has had the best reporting on this for a while now.

An item of interest to the Canes...players whose contracts expire after the 2020-21 season are eligible to sign contract extensions that start in the 2021-22 season 3 days after the CBA is ratified. That most importantly affects Svech and Hamilton, but also Dzingel, McGinn, Martinook and all 3 goalies. But clearly, Svech and Hamilton are the priorities. And with the cap remaining static at $81.5 million until revenue gets back to the $4.8 billion that was projected for the 2019-20 season, fitting both under the cap will be a challenge. There are 10 players under contract for the 2021-22 season, with a $49.3 million cap hit. So $32.2 million for 11 or 12 players, including 2 goalies.

McKenzie says the games will be at Noon, 4 pm and 8 pm local time. So there will be games every 2 hours, since Edmonton is 2 hours behind us. All off the games except the noon game are subject to change depending on the results of prior game. The round robin games between the top 4 seeds will use regular season OT/shootout rules, but the other games will be played under playoff OT rules, so there is no guarantee the game will be over in less than 3 hours.

They do 3 games a day at 4 hour intervals in World Championships / Olympics / etc... The scheduling itself will get borked if there are OT (especially multi-OT!) games, but ya, empty buildings, and.... it's Edmonton and Toronto, so.... not really worried about the ice any more than usual.

Edmonton may help in that regard, but Toronto isn't exactly the Great White North in the summertime. The ice is gonna suck, and so long as it sucks for everybody then it shouldn't be a competition issue. It will effect quality of play and that's a concern ... but what are you gonna do? Just skip it because of THAT? I mean, there are better reasons to not do this thing than that. A lot of them.

Edmonton has always had the best ice in the league. Their crew is even used for the NHL outdoor games. I think they'll be fine.
So long as they stay in Edmonton, yes. Those guys don't know the first thing about getting decent ice anywhere else, however, and should be kept as far away from Toronto as possible. The NHL uses their stupid one size fits all "great ice plan" in the playoffs and screws up the ice every danged year. They came into Raleigh last spring, took over from our local guys, immediately jacked up the ambient arena temps by 8 degrees and ruined our dehumidification system. Our ice sucked on toast for the duration of the playoffs.
