2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Caps ease some cap pressure and trade Andre Burakovsky to Colorado for Scott Kosmachuk and a 2nd and 3rd in 2020. Burakovsky is a RFA with arbitration rights. Kosmachuk is a career minor leaguer who played 8 games with Winnipeg in 15-16. Avs have about $39 million in cap space but only 5 forwards under contract. Caps have about $9 million in cap space but only 15 skaters under contract.

I know they were never satisfied with Burakovsky for whatever reason, but I thought he played really good hockey for them down the stretch in a role that he is NOT suited for.

Phil can put on his Dad shorts and hit the links anytime he likes. He's gonna love it in the dessert.

Supposedly, he gave the Pens 8 teams he would accept a trade to. Seven teams he knew the Pens wouldn’t do business with and Arizona.

Leafs trade Nazim Kadri, Calle Rosen (a 25 year old dman with 8 games played in the NHL) and a 2020 3rd rounder to Colorado for Tyson Barrie, Center Alex Kerfoot and a 2020 6th rounder.

Avs also retain half of Barrie’s salary, $2.75 million, for the 19-20 season. He’s in the last year of a 4 year/$22 million contract. The Avs have 18 players listed on their roster, half of Barrie’s salary, Orpik’s buyout and they’re still about $6 million under the floor

So, Toronto basically replaces Gardner with Barrie. Fine. I don't know that they got a ton better in that scenario but it's cheaper in the short run so it doesn't hurt them with regards to the other moves they have yet to make. Kerfoot should fit their forward group pretty well and be a solid player for them. I've seen some Leafs fans over the moon with they guy and I think they're probably taking it too far. He's fine.

Colorado ... I dunno. They had Barrie covered with their incoming prospects but you guys know where I stand with Kadri. If being out of the pressure cooker in Toronto takes a little bit of of the homicidal maniac edge off of his game, then this deal is probably a win/win. If not, then ... I dunno. They really needed a checking center and they got one. It wasn't cheap but if it works out then nobody's complaining.

Kadri had a very reasonable contract so trading him was a bit of a head scratcher but I guess you have to give to get and the Leafs needed a top 4 D in Barrie. Kerfoot is a fine third line center to plug the Kadri hole and they just signed Spezza on the cheap as a fourth line center who can win faceoffs and provide some leadership.

Colorado has been building a real nice team and I like the moves they have made. McKinnon, Kadri, Jost up the middle is solid but the Colorado D is really coming along nicely with the two young stud kids on D as the two pillars for the long haul.
