2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Lots of arbitration avoidance signings:

David Rittich 2 years $5.5 million

Pavel Buchnevich 2 years $6.5 million

Chandler Stephenson 1 year $1.05 million

The Buchnevich signing closes the NY Rangers arbitration situations for this offseason and sets the clock for their buyout window. They will get a 48 period, starting the 3rd day after their last settlement, to execute any buyout(s) of players with an AAV over $3,455,438 (so by July 31st late afternoon we will know what they have elected to do). It is widely speculated that they will take that opportunity to buyout Kevin Shattenkirk and his 2 years at $6.65 million AAV remaining. Doing so will put them in position to slide under the cap when needed. It will be interesting then to see where Shattenkirk actually lands (if anywhere).

shows how high the pay is now when obscure players make that kind of money.

Considering that $1 million is pretty much baseline grunt line money for a guy not in an entry contract cycle, I don't think and of those awards are especially high. Rittich was Calgary's defacto starter for much of last season and probably will be again once Cam Talbot predictably craps the bed this coming season. Buchnevich is a 20 goal scorer with upside, so $3 mil and change isn't out of the question ... especially since he'll likely have a bigger role for the Rangers this year. Meh ... people complain about salary creep all the time, but only a handful of RFA arbitration awards will end up being too far out of scale. And teams have the option to walk away or trade the guy if they don't like the award.

The real driving factors in salary growth are top end players getting their RFA deals and UFAs. Rank and file guys barely barely move the needle.

Tampa signs goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy to an 8 year/$76 million extension, effective with the 2020-21 season. He’s in the last year of a 3 year/$10.5 million contract. The new contract has more than half in signing bonus, including a $10 million bonus against a $1 million salary in 2021-22.

I didn’t think extensions could be signed until after January 1?

There was also talk of Chris Kreider being a cap casualty in New York and perhaps his salary is a bit too rich moving forward for the Rags with their cap crunch and all those shiny new toys like the Breadman and Trouba. Kreider could fetch a nice prospect or two or a prospect and a couple of draft picks. Rags also have Hank clogging up the payroll when I personally feel like the young Russian kid is the better option in goal.

That only applies if a player is playing on a 1 year SPC.

Buried in CBA 50.5.... eventually you get to contract extensions on pages 278 and 279:

(iv) A Player who is party to a one-year SPC may not enter into an "extension"
of such SPC prior to January 1 of the League Year covered by such SPC.

For example, the Sharks cannot sign Kevin Lebanc to a contract extension until January 1st.

Krieder's issue is the same as it's always been ... he's a nice player but just doesn't produce enough to justify anything beyond a supporting role. At $4 million AAV and with more offensive talent coming in, he's going to have to give way eventually if the Rangers are going to be a better offensive team. I'd guess this season will be his last in NY.

Tampa has signed Andrei Vasilevskiy to an eight-year, $76 million extension. The deal carries an average annual value of $9.5 million and will make Vasilevskiy the third-highest paid goaltender in 2020-21, behind Carey Price and Sergei Bobrovsky.

Whew. That's a bunch of money.

Note that this doesn't really hurt them in the short run in terms of getting Brayden Point signed, since Vasilevskiy doesn't get the big cash until 20-21. For right now he's still on a $3.5 million cap hit. Barring a move, they've only got $5 mil and change available under the cap for Pointe ... and still need to make a move or two.

This DOES put the heat on for 20-21 though. They need to win something this year because after that, they're going to have to start shedding payroll.

Umm, I posted that just after 10:00...where ya been? [emoji6]

Wow, one of my clients (he owns four radio stations in Los Angeles) just bought the Coyotes!

Free Yotes tickets for Kurtzie! For as much as a bad rap that Arizona takes on the location of the current Glendale rink, we use to go down for spring training every year and always had a great time at Yotes games. Free parking, lots of bars and restaurants in the same entertainment complex to enjoy and a really nice atmosphere in and around the arena. I know the hockey demographic lives in the Scottsdale area and find Glendale to be way out of the way and traffic hell, but it's still a nice area to take in a game and enjoy the arena area overall.

Vegas trades Nikita Gusev to the Devils for 2020 3rd round pick and a 2021 2nd round pick. The Devils immediately signed Gusev to a 2 year $9 million deal.

Damn the Metro is going to be TOUGH!!!!

Never expected less (Metro being tough) but we should be one of the teams that is getting hunted this year instead of a hunter... No one in the Metro scares me but it won't be easy...We will have to "earn" it.

Pretty big hype train for Gusev. I absolutely think it's worth giving him a shot if you’re the Devils, but I think I'll wait to vote for him on the All Star team until I see him play on a small rink against people who actually play defense and goalies who can actually stop shots.
