2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Minnesota fires Paul Fenton.

Why would you do that after the draft and the most active part of free agency? Did the owner just realize he traded Nino for Rask?

Honestly, WTF on the timing guys? This is a guy who has been over his head since day one and you fire him in the dead middle of summer after watching him stumble around doing dumb crap for a little over a year? Sheesh.

BTW ... cautionary tale about finally hiring that guy who has been a candidate for a million GM jobs before yours. Good Assistant GMs don't always make good GMs.

Tampa trades Ryan Callahan to Ottawa for goalie Mike Condon and a 2020 6th rounder. With Gaborik and MacArthur, the Sens have $15.3 million tied up on IR.

Tampa now has 4 NHL goalies under contract. GM Julien BriseBois says he expects McElhinney to be the backup and they’re trying to move Domingue. Condon will be in Syracuse if he clears waivers..

Leipold dropped the anvil on Fenton on his way out the door. He’ll be lucky to get any admin job again.

From all I'm reading, that's a good thing. Seems he's a really good scouting director and a really bad manager.

Michael Russo, who covers the Wild for the Athletic, names Paul Krepelka, Rick Dudley and Don Waddell as possible replacements among a host of others. Remember, Waddell’s contract with the Canes expired.

Ron Hextall is thought to be the front runner though and Leipold has asked the Flyers for permission to talk to him.

Interesting how much one solid year has rehabilitated Waddell's image around the league. Dudley too, for that matter.

And while I'm always skeptical of Flyers GMs once they're out in the wild, I do think Hextall would probably do a good job the next time he gets a chance. His build from within approach never really felt like a fit in Philly, but in a less "have to win right freaking now" kind of environment it should be fine.

Minnesota reminds me of the NHL's version of The Bridesmaid, so many years of playoff hockey and what they thought were good teams that always fell well short of the big prize. Fenton came in and decided to blow it all up with a few bad trades in a hurry and poof he's gone as quickly as he came in. I guess David Poile could always hire his old buddy Fenton back in some capacity but his days as a GM again are likely over.

Their 3rd year 2002-03, they made the conference finals but lost to Anaheim. They’ve been out of the 1st round twice since then, in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

The Rangers have elected to buy out Kevin Shattenkirk.

Yeah ... probably a good call, mostly because he's just been a bad fit there. I believe that Shattenkirk still has some game left to offer, but it's going to take someone willing to just throw ice time at him and hope he can settle in eventually.

Rangers get spanked with a $6 million cap hit in 20-21 with the buyout. They have just over $1 million in cap space for a 22 man roster but that includes Matt Belesky who was buried last year. Burying him again gives them another $900k in cap space.

Flames buy out Michael Stone. They save $2.3 million this year and next.

NYR ... showing how much fun it is to rebuild while at the Cap max. What a weird, weird franchise. Oddly enough, they look like they might actually be fun to watch again, if nothing else. Good for them, because they've been deadly dull for a couple of years now.

This off season has gotten absolutely bogged down on RFAs and a couple of sticky UFAs. Three teams are over the limit, although Toronto is only over on paper since they're sitting on two long term IR assignments they can make whenever they choose to flip some space. Ottawa meanwhile appears to be trying to set a record for how far they can be below the cap floor in terms of paying salaries to guys who actually play in their colors and still avoid sanctions. $15 million and change in LTIR hits is the only thing keeping them afloat and half of their active roster is out of contract at the end of the coming season. God help Sens fans with that lunatic Melnyk in charge.

What this off season needs is for 2 or 3 of those high profile RFAs to budge and somebody to sign Jake Gardiner so the remaining free agents can get settled.

It sounds like all the other unsigned RFA's are waiting to see what Marner gets to set the market so to speak for those other guys like Tkachuk, Rantanen, Point, etc.

Do we have any suprises before the season starts?

In terms of the Canes? I dunno. Waddell has dropped a couple of hints that the club has at least looked at a couple of trade possibilities. That could mean anything, honestly ... from a slight tweak of the forward lines to a right side D move. Who knows? I get the strong feeling that the Canes are happy with where they are, and once Williams is either in or out, whatever move that triggers might well be the last for the summer. Donny could well be talking about that ... the groundwork for a move in reaction to adding Williams. I do think Williams is going to play, so long as his body isn't screaming at him to stop.

Surprise from elsewhere in the league? Marner's deal could well trigger a million other moves once it gets settled. Or not. I've seen a couple of cautious sounding reports that indicate that Toronto might actually be close to getting him signed, but that could also drag out into the season the way Nylander did. There's a chance that Toronto completely screws up the market for RFA forwards by over-paying Marner, but there's also a chance that it won't have that big an impact. A lot of those guys are in good situations and probably won't be all that eager to push for a move. That limits the options.

I'll be shocked if Reimer is a Cane still by October.

Shocked is pushing it, but I think I'd be mildly surprised. Based on an interview I heard with Waddell the plan is to let camp sort it out. They want two strong options at the NHL level and other than one being Mrazek, I don't think the club really cares who the other one turns out to be. If Reimer loses out to either Forsberg or Ned, I think he gets moved ... just for cost/logic reasons. But, based on what I saw from Reimer last season, I think there's a VERY good chance that he loses that goalie battle in camp.
