2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Yeah I agree with JB. If Waddell moves on I wont lose any sleep over it. I kind of wish Ronny could have had some money to work with and stayed from the beginning.

Nope.

Glad that ship has sailed.

Full agreement here. For all the good things Francis did here building the depth, his King Cautious act was never going to be a fit for Dundon. Hopefully he's learned from his errors in Raleigh and will do a great job in Seattle. Ron Francis will never not be on my list of favorite hockey humans ... I just don't want him to be my GM.

If waddell leaves, is Tlusky the next GM?

I mean ... maybe. It would depend on Tulsky's ambitions, but I certainly wouldn't count on him to manage the business side the way Waddell has been doing. You'd have to bring in a biz wonk to augment the crew, if nothing else. At the end of the day he's a numbers wonk and those guys generally don't end up running the whole front office.

And how about contracts, trades of all kinds, personnel management, player management... even making scouting decisions, etc. Don't think I'd want him as GM.

Stats guys should be advisors to the decision makers not the 'final' word on those.

I imagine that if Waddell does move on Dundon would either promote Dudley or Krepelka.

Vellucci would have to be seriously 2nd guessing his lateral AHL coaching move, if Waddell moves on.

I wouldn’t rule out Francis offering Vellucci a job in Seattle at some point down the line. He worked with him long enough here to know what he offers.

On Vellucci ... people keep forgetting the real issue with him. He wants to coach an NHL team. He doesn't want to be an NHL GM or AGM or coach in the AHL or run another Junior program. He wants to be an NHL head coach. ALL of his decisions will reflect that desire. He took the job in Pittsburgh's system because he was betting on Rutherford running out of patience with Sullivan over Brind'Amour running afoul of Dundon. Maybe Jimmy made him a coach in waiting promise, maybe not ... the math works out the same either way. It's fairly mercenary thinking, but the only reason Vellucci was coaching in Charlotte last season was to wait and see if Brindy panned out with the Canes.

So no ... Francis won't be hiring him unless he offers him a road to the NHL bench, which I cannot imagine is on offer. And no ... Vellucci doesn't care about a potential opening for the GM's job in Raleigh which he declined to formally interview for only a year ago.

The Habs fans on Twitter are all over this, and Dundon being broke and poor. It's sad how pathetic most of those people are.

Yeah ... hockey Twitter is ridiculous for that. And I honestly think any Canes fan who takes that crap seriously needs to just bail on Twitter and find something else to do.

I've literally been on there maybe twice thus summer. And between politics and ignorant "hockey fans" usually just stay away. I actually unfollow a lot of people once summer gets here.

I use Twitter to follow some sports media types, but the second they become annoying I'm out. That's the thing with those social media platforms ... you get to curate your own experience. Why people allow it to drag them into all sorts of quagmires, I have no clue.

Sara Civian has managed all by her lonesome to send Hab Twitter idiots into a summer long triggered state just over the Aho stuff. It went on for weeks and really was sad to see how bent all of those people really are.

I hate to divert this conversation on the GM situation, but the Twitter phenomenon continues to amaze me. I use it occasionally, but it's not my "go-to" thing. When you think about it, it's not much different that the philosophy behind "grassroots" initiatives - where a relatively small number of people can influence an organization or government that is way out of proportional to their size. Guess it's a squeaky wheel thing.

I find the Twitter universe to be chalk full of hate and just all out vulgar and nasty threats and mostly full of things most people would never say to anyone's face. In that regard it's not a great place to visit often.

I'll always think fondly of Sara for that. She was truly doing God's work in sending that seething mass of idiots over the edge.

And we have a Hurricanes off season thread, guys. THAT's where we should be keeping the Waddell chatter. Although let's be honest. It's summer, so whatever.

Apparently Andrei Markov wants to play one more year..pref. with MTL. If not open. To sign one year with another club. He's 40. Been playing in khl last two seasons. Won a grgarian cup . Wants to hit 1000 NHL games. Thoughts?
