2019 NHL Off Season News Thread

Considering the state of many bluelines in the NHL, I suspect Markov even at his advanced age is better than 25% of the guys who will be regulars on NHL rosters. As long as he is willing to take a lower salary there are plenty of contending teams that could use him as a 2nd/3rd pair guy.

Montreal should consider it. They have the cap room. And their current top 7, assuming the pylon that is Karl Alzner is buried in the minors again is Shea Weber, Jeff Petry, Ben Chiarot, Brett Kulak, Mike Reilly, Christian Folin and Victor Mete. PTO to start but how could the Habs not jump at the chance to stick Markov in the lineup for one more season if he shows he is good enough still and is willing to take, say $2 million?

He will find a team willing to give him a PTO for sure. He was good and probably still is pretty good.

Wow, 40 years old, $2 million dollars, I think I would take a hard pass on that old dinosaur in Markov. When I still see the likes of UFA guys like Phaneuf (34), Girardi (35), Lovejoy (35), MacQuaid (32), Hutton (26), Sbisa (29) still sitting out there, I'd rather have a discounted, younger version of the remaining UFA crop over a 40 year old, very slow moving Markov with today's pace of the NHL game.

A 40 year old Markov is probably better than all of the Dmen you listed.

Agreed... Markov never relied on physical ability. He's a cerebral player with off the charts hockey IQ. I always thought of him as a Lidstrom "lite" type. I really hope the Habs bring him back for one more season. I bet he's still very effective.

He was basically a 40 point player his last 5 years in the league. That would have made him top 30 in the league last year. Someone is going to at least give him a PTO.

was gonna say. He was a very good and reliable defenseman during his tenure. IIRC it wasn't that he wasn't good anymore, but I think he wanted more than the Habs were willing to commit to at the last contract end

The state gave the OK for the Islanders new arena at Belmont park area

Great news for that fanbase and that market. The Belmont location is going to be so much better for their fan base logistically and having a proper arena designed to accommodate hockey will give them some home ice advantage again. And I don't care about that franchise, but it's about time they got something nice. It's been a rough couple of decades.

Today's reading pleasure from the Buffalo News.
Depending on what you believe Rasmus Ristolainen might be trying to "O'Reilly" his way out of Buffalo. He was -41 last season.

He said he has focused most of his offseason regimen on improving his speed.
That's probably the best bit of reporting in that piece. Yeah, good idea kid. You looked like Dion Phaneuf out there last season, and not in a good way.

Rangers name Tuomo Ruutu as Assistant Director of Player Development. He’ll primarily work with Rangers prospects in Europe.

Good for him. I saw where he was on the coaching staff for the Finns at the recent World Juniors.

Sens re-sign Colin White, 6 years/$28.5 million. Probably doesn’t break the unsigned RFA lofgjam though.

Yeah ... I'd guess not. Kind of surprised that White waited this long given that he'll be making more that $4 mil a year on the back of only one decent NHL season.

Also in that announcement is their new Director of North American Scouting, Chris Morehouse, who is JDs son-in-law and new amateur scout Marshal Davidson who is his brother.

I saw the family Slavin at Vivace before the adoption was final, so they went out in public with her even though they wouldn’t/couldn’t post pictures. She’s a cutie.
Heck ... Jaccob's wife had the baby in one of those elaborate sling things at one of the later playoff home games last spring. My wife almost (literally) ran into her on the concourse.
