2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

"We've come a long way from a training ground with dog walkers cutting across our pitches and getting changed in portable cabins"

Nine years ago, Luton Town was in the sixth tier of English football, but after today's penalty kick win over Coventry, they are back in the Premier League. What a story
Yes, a great story, but--in the interest of accuracy--they were in the fifth tier nine years ago. Their accomplishment is the equivalent of what Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney hope to do with Wrexham, which took the first step by moving up from the fifth to fourth tier at the end of this past season.

I've had the great good fortune to see some badminton played in Malaysia (though not at that level) and they're WAY more than serious about it than anyone in this country is...it's virtually got a religious following. That video definitely captures the intensity, dedication, and skill of badminton players going for it...and that was just one point! Thanks for posting.

It's fun that different parts of the world have sports they concentrate on and others they pretty much ignore. Examples like Water polo is king in Singapore, Rugby rules in Fiji & New Zealand, Baseball & Sumo Wrestling are tops in Japan, Cricket in India & the Caribbean nations, Football (soccer) throughout Latin America & Europe, Hockey & lacrosse in Canada, Rugby and Australian rules football in Australia. So, what's considered a pivotal global event depends on what pert of the world you're standing in.

And cornhole in NC

Cornhole's popularity goes well beyond North Carolina; there's now a professional circuit that has a national TV deal with CBS Sports.

Another good example is how huge team handball is huge in Germany.
Love team handball. We played it in high school PE class.

And the American Cornhole Association Headquarters is located in the nearby metropolis of Rock Hill, SC.

The State Senate Finance Committee has begun working on the sports gambling bill. One change already is the start date. Originally slated for January 8, 2024, it’s now set to be no later than 12 months after the bill becomes law.

I’d you don’t have tickets for the 7 on 7 soccer tournament at Wake Med Soccer Park, some of Thursday’s and Friday’s matches will be streamed on Peacock, including all elimination matches starting on Friday night. Any match not on Peacock will be on the TST YouTube channel.

I'm going Thursday night...looking forward to it!

The sports betting bill passed its 2nd reading in the Senate, 38-11. The 3rd reading and final vote will be held tomorrow. Then the House will have to re-vote, the Senate made some changes, most significantly raising the tax from 14 to 18%. UNC-Charlotte, App State and ECU were also added to list of schools that will benefit.

Chip says the Centennial Authority is meeting today, talking about having 2 sports books on the property. Chairman Philip Isley says that one would be outside the arena and open 24/7.

Neighbors are gonna love that. Meh. The actual neighbors are college kids, single professionals and young marrieds. They'll live

The sports betting bill passed the second reading in the House 68-45 so it heads to Gov. Cooper for signature. He was on with Ovies and Giglio earlier but wouldn’t commit to signing it. Regardless, I can’t see him vetoing it, so it will become law in 10 days even if he doesn’t sign.

I was interested to hear last week that the House has been kicking around a full casino gambling bill in addition to both this Sports Betting bill that appears to be nearing the finish line and a 'video lottery terminal' bill which is a topic that has been kicked around and debated for years as video lottery terminals are allowed to still operate in seedy parlors sprinkled around the state.

Full casino gambling outside of reservations I always assumed would be a bridge the state of NC would never ever cross. Yet both Republican leaders of the House and Senate appeared to indicate Virginia's salvo to allow full fledged casinos is rapidly changing the equation for NC.

I will believe it when I see it. Those that opposed sports betting are really going to push hard to not allow expanded casino gambling and you better believe the Eastern Cherokees are going to lobby like heck to keep their exclusive NC casino business free of in state competition.

I believe that sports betting will not be allowed until sometime in 2024 after this bill passes. That will give the Centennial Authority and Gale Force time to figure out where they will be opening a sports betting facility around/in PNC and to determine what company will win the bidding to be the backer/facilitor of those betting avenues.

Yet to be worked in conference of course, but I saw that the House version of the bill required something like 7 months for implementation. So, you'd be looking at January-March next year as a target. You KNOW they'll want to be up and running for March Madness

Bloody squirrels. At my dad's gas line car and my gas grill line
Yeah, I don't have much love for squirrels either. A few weeks ago, I set out some cracked corn for the (wild) turkeys behind the house at daybreak. Before it was even good and light, there were squirrels in it. I was thrilled to see a red tailed hawk dive down & nab one. I keep hoping the foxes will take their toll on those bushy tailed tree rats, but not so much. The coyotes appear to have run the foxes off. They might force me dust off the slingshot and be ready for them come next squirrel season.

We have a frequent visitor on our deck that is decimating a hibiscus. When I bang on the glass, he just looks at me and gives me the proverbial finger.
