2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

One of the most exciting athletes to watch of all time, in any sport. He was the ideal player for small ball.
While an ideal player for small ball, paradoxically, he also holds the record for most home runs leading off a game, with 81. George Springer is the active leader with 60 and he had 12 last year. Could he catch Henderson? Maybe. But I don’t think anyone will pass him for most runs scored. Henderson finished with 2,295. The active leader is Freddie Freeman, 129th all time with 1,298 runs scored.

The lead off role has changed so much and teams just don't prioritize stolen bases as much in the modern era with the evolution of ballparks trending to smaller field dimensions. We'll likely never see numbers like Henderson put up, nor another small ball era. I enjoyed that kind of game, but I've always been a sucker for defense regardless of sport.

The SB has gotten quite the renaissance (up 50-ish%) the last 2 seasons with the larger bases and pitch clock and limited pickoff rules resulting in total steal numbers for the league that haven't been seen in a couple of decades.... man, what Ricky could have done today.

Yeah. That was done to encourage teams to reintroduce stolen bases to their gameplans ... because it had gotten so rare. In 2022 the league leader only had like 40 stolen bases. Last season it was up to 70-something I think. Back in the 80s, the league leaders often broke 100

Also for safety reasons (base sizes) and to speed up the games (pitcher restrictions), but yeah, the increase in SB's has been a really nice benefit. Ricky's top 3 marks were 130, 108, and 100... a prime Ricky maybe could've nabbed 180 in today's (2023+) game.

Torry Holt is one of 15 finalists for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class. Former Panther Luke Kuechly is also a finalist, in his first year of eligibility. Other finalists in their first year are Eli Manning, Terrell Suggs, Adam Vinatieri and Marshal Yanda

Hope no one took the under in the Pop Tarts Bowl. Over nine minutes to go in the second quarter and its already toast.

Some absolutely great football games today. None of them involving State or Carolina.

At least State kept their fighting record unblemished. I like Doeren coaching toughness on the field but they have a real problem not looking like complete jackasses with these postgame shenanigans.

Carolina looked like they didn’t even want to be there. I realize they were playing with a bunch of true freshman that havent played much, if at all, all season but geez. Most of those guys won’t survive the next regime because BB won’t put up with that crap. I am personally up in the air about the BB era. It’s either going to be a complete disaster or it will be a huge success and will change how teams structure their programs.

Being in the position I am I get to hear alot of behind the scenes ‘inside info’ at State and Carolina and I’ve heard great things about BB and Lombardi and I’ve heard not so great things. But my current sources are employees who have yet to hear their fate and I may be getting conflicting and biased information. It will take a while to flush out truth from emotional responses.

Regardless, the press they will get will be good for the ACC and it will force ACC teams to make changes to keep up. Because right now the ACC absolutely sucks in football and basketball. Time for Jim Phillips to hit the road. Lots of noise around the league and most are ready to push him out. Too much money on the line to risk getting left further in the dust.

The fact that I can say that my UCONN Huskies beat UNC in bowl game, even if was just this one time, is always going to bring a smile to my face.

As much as the new playoffs will make things more interesting for College Football, the whole NIL/Transfer portal stuff is just a disaster for the other bowl games given how many players opt out. I mean, UCONN beat UNC....but what exactly was UNC putting on the field for that game? It might not have mattered either way, UCONN was probably capable of winning anyways, but who the heck wants to shell out money to go watch far lesser versions of already subpar teams play in a meaningless Bowl game?

Dave Doeren's idea regarding this issue is pretty interesting. The reason that the portal opens in December is because the transfers have to be enrolled at the new university in time for the second semester. So, start the football season about a month early and make football a one semester sport with the national championship game played January 1. I couldn't imagine playing high level football in the Southern states in July, though.

I knew UConn would win just based on the roster UNC was putting out there. I hope mora gets UConn going on football. No reason they can’t be successful there.

Well, the timing is certainly one of the things that desperately needs to be fixed about the portal. Of course, the question of who exactly could impose any new rules is an open one. The NCAA couldn't organize a kid's birthday party at this point, unless they've already been doing it for 100 year and have a template to work from. Asking them to take on a serious task would be like asking the Chiefs to fix the power play

Jay Beaner of South Carolina is achieving Jurgen Klopp levels of whining and attempted referee intimidation.
