2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Jeffbear posted this in the miscellaneous thread. I’m referring to the last line about betting.

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups were arrested by the FBI this morning as part of a gambling investigation. There will be a press conference at 10:00 this morning. The investigation surrounds suspicious betting on a Hornets-Pelicans game in March 2023 when Rozier was with the Hornets. There was a surge of bets on Rozier coming under on points, rebounds and assists. Sportsbooks stopped accepting bets, 30 bets came in in 46 minutes from a professional gambler. He left the game after 10 minutes claiming a foot injury. That was also the last game he played for the Hornets, he was traded to the Heat the following January. Rozier had been cleared by an internal NBA investigation.

This all comes after the arrest of former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter who pleaded guilty to a gambling scheme involving prop bets. He was banned from the NBA last year.

Edit: Billups’ arrest is not related to sports betting. According to ABC, he was charged in an illegal poker operation tied to the Mafia.

Scary Terry just keeps earning that nickname. There was a fair amount of local noise when he was unceremoniously dumped by the Hornets after being a fairly key player for them, but since they were a sinking ship that year anyway it was easy to write it off as getting what you could for relatively cheap veteran contracts.

And speaking of the mafia, I saw where an Italian soccer club ran into trouble this week when some of their financing was tied to the mob. Nice to see that the criminals of old are still out there doing that thing. And surely they're keeping their hands off of sports even more now that gambling is legal in the world's biggest sports market. Que eyerolls

I've been watching the Sound the Siren for about a year. These guys get a lot of big names because the do a great job with their questions. Chuck Kaiton interview. Pierre McGuire was on with them for the first 10 minutes or so too.
It's a relief from not seeing anything, and it's enjoyable to watch. There are a few other Carolina specific podcasters who are growing and some not that bad. All this for lack of the mainstream media. Times are a changing.

Not to hijack this, but Ray and I will be changing the format of our podcast if we continue it; we'll be discussing our future this week. It's been a lot of fun talking to the Caniacs for 6 seasons.

The last 1/2 season or so is - everything else is on most any other podcast network (Amazon, Spotify, Apple, etc)

Huh. I guess they just aren't making enough money to keep the operation going? The article and Malik's statements are so vague that I'm not sure it was even worth my time reading.

They make it sound like they want to move up and are trying to generate funds/support to get a bigger stadium so they can. Need an 18,000 seat stadium to move up. Still weird, but no one has ever accused Malik of making much sense

I’m not sure that US Soccer has granted USL Division One Tier 1 status. Right now ow, only MLS has Tier 1 stwtuus in the US, the USL Championship is Tier 2. And everything I’ve seen is that Division One launches in 2028.

Malik got money whipped by Tepper when he was looking to move up to MLS. He didn’t have a stadium, he didn’t have a firm site for a stadium and Tepper swooped in and got the expansion franchise. And then he put his eggs in the Downtown South basket with John Kane but got no entertainment tax revenue to build a white elephant of a stadium. The men are drawing 2,500 fans per game, the Courage set a new record this year averaging nearly 7,700 and he wanted a 20,000 seat stadium.

This is about the new USL

Yes, US Soccer did grant them tier 1 status. The USL just hired Tony Scholes from the English Premier League to run the new division one lead, which will probably start play in 2027.

More on Scholes here...

NY Jets are having a fire sale, picking up two or three first round picks and at least one second. Too bad their drafting sucks.

The best pick I can remember from them in recent years ... Sauce Gardiner ... just got shipped out for a pick. So, yeah. Jets are doing Jets things.

That guy needs a decent press officer so badly that it hurts. Their press releases NEVER make sense and are always emotionally dead. Bottom line, NCFC are shifting tracks to the new USL and joining the group competing with MLS for Tier 1 supremacy, yet that thing makes it sound like they're pulling up stakes and dropping down a division.

Thanks to you and Kurtz for the explanation. I hadn’t been following the new usl stuff so I had no idea what they were talking about. I have enough on my plate trying to keep up with my premier league and MLS news

Do these folks think that MLS is not stable enough and is ripe for taking down? Or will this be a ploy to eventually merge ala AFL/NFL and ABA/NBA?
