2020 Draft - Canes Picks

Gunler was on most "best player available" lists, so ... sure. Scott Wheeler with The Athletic had him first on his BPA to start round two, so this will be viewed as a solid pick. I understand he's got big upside but isn't a puck carrier ... and frankly, I don't generally like forwards like that, but hey ... whatever.

Canes 3rd pick: 2nd round, 53 overall:
Vasiliy PonomarevCRUS5' 10"180QMJHLSHAWINIGAN

Dad is a skills coach for Shawinigan.

on NHL Network/Sirius, they said high skill set and they described him as "built like a small beer fridge" lol

Another big motor center with a good skill set. Supposedly this kid is all action, all the time and plays in all situations. Again ... fine. I noticed that most of the top of the BPA lists were either offensive minded D or do-it-all D and I've said before that I don;t like those guys in the 2nd round ... preferring to take risks with forwards in the first two rounds.

Fun fact ... The Athletic's Corey Pronman had us picking Ponomaryev at 53 in his ridiculous all 7 rounds mock draft.

Love to see the different countries/leagues we are drafting from. In one of those "I wonder" moments, "I wonder" if our drafting would have been as bad had our former GMs not been afraid to pick Russians.

When the European guys, it always comes down to “when will we see him in North America”? The Finns and Russians from last year, Sellgren, etc.

Traded pick #140 to LA Kings for pick 159 and the Kings' 7th-rounder in 2021

Maybe a pick in 2021 coming back because the Kings don't pick for a while?
