2020 Draft - Canes Picks

An article on The Athletic on Seth Jarvis’ draft day experience. By now, we’ve probably seen the image of the locker with his name on it. But the Canes also created personal videos for each player they drafted, narrated in English and Russian by Svech, and sent them out as a keepsake.

That canes staff is second to none. Great idea about the videos for the draftees.

Thomas Greiss is off to Detroit, 2 years/$7.2 million. Big salary spread too, he gets $2.8 million in the first year, $4.4 million in the 2nd.

Scott Burnside was embedded with the Canes in pre-draft meetings at the new place and in the locker room for both days of the draft. A couple of trade opportunities came up, including a deal for Lias Andersson from the Rangers. He ultimately went to the Kings for #60 overall. He also has a couple of things from free agency. The Canes did check in on Lundqvist but you know how that ended up.

Wow. They locked down Ponamarov quickly. Usually the Russian guys tend to wait a bit to see what kind of leverage they can get on their KHL contracts before they sign their ELCs with their draft team.

He’s playing for Shawinigan in the Q.

Cool ... I missed that detail. Too much info flying at one's head too quickly these days.

He’s already a leg up on the last guy we drafted from Shawinigan...the immortal Philippe Paradis. He was traded to the Leafs before he signed an entry level deal with us. As I was checking him, I saw that he was involved in a trade that also had 2 future Canes. In 2010, the Leafs traded him and Viktor Stalberg to Chicago for Kris Versteeg and Bill Sweat.

Lias Andersson is an interesting one...such a high draft pick that was a flop on Broadway...the LA Kings employ his father on their staff but apparently made the trade for Lias without the father knowing much of anything about the trade in advance. He may be a flop but the upside is intriguing...kinda wish the Canes could have maybe seen that one through since they had an extra second rounder in their pocket.

It sounded like it morphed into a larger discussion and the Canes were already on the clock. But with dominoes falling, if they make the trade for Andersson, do they sign Fast?

I don't think one had to do with the other. The signing of Fast was to fulfill the immediate need for a bottom-six forward; the potential deal for Andersson would have been an exchange of prospects.

Meh ... Andersson just doesn't move the needle for me. He's got puck skills but aside from his pre-draft year and that one World Juniors the guy never actually does anything. Hard pass.

I agree, I'm glad the Canes just kept their 2nd round picks and hoped to hit a home run with each of them. Andersson so far is as strikeout, maybe who at best becomes a dribbler up the line for a single.

Oh, I'd 100% rather take a swing at a kid our scouts like over a guy who has shown zero signs of breaking through in a program that was really rooting for him to show up this last season. Maybe if the upside looked more like Bokk's upside, you'd take a longer look ... but, nah. No problems with the pass on that option.
