2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

Freddie Andersen was named 2nd star of the week with a 1.91 GAA and .938 save % in 3 games. In other words, his season average.

Nazim Kadri was the 1st star with 3 goals, all game winners, and 5 assists in 4 games. Johnny Hockey was 3rd star with 2 goals and 6 assists in 4 games. The 6 assists and his +8 were best in the league.

Three guys who were left for dead (Freddie and Gaudreau) or basically ignored (Kadri) by the name brand hockey press, right there. All three have been killing it all season too.

Sad news from Canes land…

I sat next to Dave at a business dinner a few years ago…seemed like a good guy. RIP
Huh. That news sucks. Dave Olsen was a logistics monster in his prime. RIP, buddy.

I saw something a couple of months back indicating that the Canes were interviewing for new building managers, so I assumed he was retiring. I guess he had some previous health concerns.

Looks like legal sports betting could be coming to NC. Right now it's only legal at the Cherokee casinos. Seems all the NC pro teams are OK with it.

Yes, he was no longer running the building as of just before the start of the season, but the tenor of much of what I read suggested it was not simply a retirement.

Dave was a great guy, I knew him through a good friend from WRAL and Dave was always helpful to assist in great concert seats when you needed some inside help. He worked long long days to keep that building running on all cylinders. Way too young to pass away.

Dundon had already stated in an interview earlier this year that he viewed legalization of sports betting in NC as essential for the Canes. The current bill that the state legislature is kicking around would allow for the opening of a sportsbook at or around PNC arena (no farther than a half mile away). Waddell has stated that just about every possible partner has already reached out the Canes to try to get their foot in the door.

In addition to the advertising revenues the Canes would end up with as a result of a partnership with a sports betting outfit, the other big selling point is that it would drive traffic to events at PNC as more people would be around the arena because of the sportsbook and more likely to want to attend games (since they can bet on the game right before).

Its going to pass eventually. Other similar sportsbooks will be allowed at other larger sports venues in NC as well.

Caps have a sports book in the Capital One center . If they can open nearby PNC that reminds me of riverboat casinos on the Mississippi. In some states they are not boats and not on the river. :) They just need to be near the river. :)

Further info on this...Dave had not retired...he was actually running a smaller arena in Corpus Christi--the American Bank Center--since separating from the Canes.

The blurbs I've seen about this is making the sportbook at/near PNC kind of a restaturant with a sportsbook. That of course would be open year round.

Given the way PNC arena and its parking are kind of isolated, its probably a bit tricky to put the sportsbook with restaurant attached to the arena even though that would probably be the best location . Someone looking to place some bets on the night of, say, a concert or monster truck show is not going to want to drop $20 to park just because there is an event that night that they didn't plan on going to.

Not sure exactly where it will go when the time comes, but that bill very specifically limited the distance to no more than half a mile from the venue. So we can have a competition....draw your circle with a 1/2 mile radius from PNC and guess the location.

Does anyone know if they are ever going to do anything with the spaces where Twisted Waffle used to exist? I don't bemoan the loss of Twisted Waffle (I thought the frozen whatever it was they served was crappy), but its odd to see those spaces shut down like that with no signs of life.

I get that handing out waffle cones filled with frozen product leads to a lot of no masks and exposed tongues, but is that really the reason that they have those shut down still? (he asks, hoping that the answer is something BETTER is planned for those spaces....).

What's the definition of venue? Is it the building only, or does it include the parking lot or other attacched property? That makes a big difference in what's available for development.

Would depend on what the UDO requires.

Weird. They never announced anything ... unless I just missed, which is entirely possible.

Dunno. There's a guy who works in catering that sits down near us sometimes and I asked him about Twisted Waffle at one of the games early this season. He said the closure was still classed as temporary, internally. So, if they have plans for something else I doubt it'll happen this season.

They’re not very big spaces and there is no other kitchen equipment other than fozen custard machines. Might be an expensive refit to upgrade it to something else.
