2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

The Canes are hosting Kid’s Day on Sunday, February 27. In conjunction with it, they’re auditioning kids 15 and under to sing the US and Canadian Anthems.

Good. I'd rather listen to kids singing the anthem than the other options they've been trotting out.

They put Sloan in the PNC rafters right? Corchiani is up there and they towed his car at 1 game for parking in the wrong spot. He wasn't mad about it ,he thought it was funny.

Sloan went back to Florida because cheapskate Casey would not pay him. Rumor has it he was like 5th or 6th in pay in the ACC. Also I heard Valvano was going to apply at Florida but when they hired Sloan his wife said why not apply for the job Sloan just left? And the rest is history.

Ugh ... we gonna re-hash this urban legend again? Casey was a cheapskate for sure, but that's a version of events that flatters Norm Sloan more than he deserves. He had stopped putting in the grunt work at State after the National Championship and had to be goaded into getting back out on the serious recruiting trail when State's program took a serious dip. It was the goading that drove him off more than the pay ... despite what he said later. Say what you want about Willis Casey ... dude got stuff done, and his next hire worked out pretty well.

and the best 3 Sloan recruits in the late 70s were Bailey Lowe and Whittenberg but he did not coach them beyond their freshman year.

Those were the group he recruited after Casey threatened him ... up until then the only post championship player of any lasting note was Kenny Carr, who pretty much came to State to be the next David Thompson, not because anybody bothered to put in any work recruiting him. Fair enough, he was maybe the best pure scorer to play at State in my lifetime ... but he mostly played with a bunch of soup cans for teammates. He got a few others like Clyde Austin and Hawkeye Whitney (RIP and f*** cocaine), but it was all pipeline stuff that he didn't have to really work for. Even with those three guys as a foundation, it took Valvano two full years of misery and hard work to get things going again.

B. Yeah ... but it's the All Star Break and I've had a lot going on this week

It sprung from the post about auditioning kid Anthem singers, which legit belongs on this thread. Moving the Mrs. Sloan comments to the Grab Bag thread without the context of original Anthem post doesn’t make sense.

Hawkeye Whitney is still alive from what I see. Are you confusing him with Lorenzo Charles who died in the bus crash? I actually saw the bus before the police or ambulance arrived at the crash scene.

Once teams report from the break, anything off topic will either be moved or removed. Anybody can post about whatever they want in the Grab Bag, and one could even start with ... a thing I saw in another thread made me think about _____. K? Thanks
