Is ESPN going to cut back MLB, NBA and colllege BB for NHL? Does not seem likely. Maybe the plan is for ESPN3 to be a regular channel.

They’re shedding subscribers like crazy, so it won’t be over the air. They’ll probably pick up a couple of games during the week, maybe a weekend game on ABC, but this probably allows them to build inventory for ESPN+.

Correct. This is 100% about building out ESPN+ and has next to nothing to do with the current lineup on the main station.

I've been buying ESPN+ for the last few months as my Spurs have progressed to the final of the Carabao Cup and been pleasantly surprised to find a decent number of NHL games streaming on the platform on most nights.

My oldest daughter got the whole Disney bundle and created a profile for us. There is at least 1 NHL game per night. They also have broadcast rights to the German, Italian, Dutch and Indian soccer leagues. They have both English Cups but not the Premier League itself and they don’t have Ligue 1 or La Liga, whose US rights are held by BeIN Sport.

If ESPN paid out moneys to air NHL games that also include playoffs games, then I'm sure the main channels will be airing regular season games as well.

That seems to be an awful lot of money just to sell more ESPN+ subscriptions. And why would the NHL agree to a media package with a network that will show the games on only an upgrade package?

Yeah ... subscription base costs versus the cost of programming is NOT something I understand, but I know that ESPN+ has struggled with inventory in some demographics. I'm assuming that hockey fits a niche for them that college hoops and the NBA doesn't cover. They really don;t need anything else on their broadcast channels, otherwise they'd have made a stronger play in the last round of negotiations when they pretty much threw out a baseline bid and told Fox and NBC to have fun with the NHL. Bottom line, as much as we all love it the NHL is a decidedly niche sport in the US, so it's going to get mostly shunted regional and subscription coverage for the near to medium term.

This could also be a concern if NBC re-ups with the NHL. I saw a lot of talk about NBC putting NHL games on their Peacock streaming service. That isn't to say that there will not be any games on the regular NBC Networks (USA Network rather than NBCSN down the road and weekend regular season games on NBC), but they are also going to put some games exclusively on streaming. What happens with Playoff games will be closely watched, but certainly the NHL is not going to accept playoffs games being buried on streaming only channels

I don't think this will matter much for the Canes, we will still get the handful of regular network games with everything else being available via our local channel (Bally Network or whatever happens).

Yep Sinclair :( and our 1 National game a season unless it's preempted for Chicago Detroit from last season.. Or Buffalo and anybody.

Don’t forget, NBCSN is going away at the end of the year. Most of it will move to USA Network, but there is no way that some games don’t end up on Peacock.

Some more details on the NHL/ESPN deal, with a presser coming at 4:15

- they get the Finals in 4 of the 7 years of the deal (already disclosed)
- they get 1 conference final and half of the 1st/2nd round playoff games. IIRC, NBC has the exclusive from the 2nd round but the 1st round is local.
- ESPN/ABC will exclusively carry 25 regular season games, with 50 more produced by ESPN that will stream exclusively on ESPN+ and Hulu
- NHL.TV is going away, all streaming content will require a subscription to ESPN+

Given the ratings and the trend towards directed market streaming services, I don't think it matters much to the LEAGUE if there's no "national game" on any regular basis. Those things are ghosts of the past, and as we've seen pretty clearly over the last couple of decades national network coverage only benefits a handful of markets that don't need help with market growth in the first place. The NHL needs somewhere accessible and reliable to cover their teams' games in their local and regional markets without having to manage the whole things themselves. The streaming platforms do that nicely, without having to sweat our carriage fee standoffs and other BS. I'm pretty sure that's where the industry is heading anyway, and the NHL is small enough to get ahead of the curve a bit.

So on the subject of Peacock...I decided to make my son happy who just happens to enjoy the WWE and especially the PPV events like Wrestlemania, so I took the plunge on a very cheap four month Peacock intro subscription. I was pretty shocked to learn that Peacock still has not found a way to figure out the rights fees and arrangements with companies like Samsung that happen to make 1/4 of all Smart TV's in this country and Amazon who happens to sell the ever popular Fire Sticks and Fire Cubes. So Samsung has no Peacock app to stream the service on my Smart TV's...the Amazon Firesticks do not yet offer a Peacock app to stream using that device...so lots of bugs to work out before Peacock becomes a mainstream option as a platform for NHL hockey between now and then.

Before I got my Roku, I had to connect my phone or tablet to my receiver if I wanted to stream anything other than Netflix, which I had on my “smart” Blu-ray player. It was the same for HBO Max before they were added to Roku a few months after going live.

It looks like Peacock only runs on LG and certain TVs running Android 5.1 and higher

I just watch on my tablet, or if I want the big screen I connect a laptop HDMI output to my tv (Samsung) as an external monitor and then watch in browser on peacocktv.com. A hassle I'm hoping gets fixed soon, but who knows. I signed up to watch the PL matches that aren't on NBC(SN), we'll see if I keep it or not.

From the article:

It is highlighted by: exclusive coverage of the Stanley Cup Final on ABC in four of the seven years of the agreement, with the ability to simulcast/megacast on ESPN+ and additional ESPN networks; the return of live NHL action to ESPN networks with 25 exclusive national regular-season games on ABC or ESPN; 75 national regular-season games per season produced by ESPN that will stream exclusively on both ESPN+ and Hulu; half of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on ABC and ESPN each season; and coverage annually of NHL's Face-off (opening night games), the NHL All-Star Game and Skills Challenge, plus other NHL special events each season.

Additionally, the NHL's out-of-market streaming package, with more than 1,000 games (formerly on NHL.TV), will now be available for fans to stream only as part of an ESPN+ subscription.
