2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

Brandon Sutter is a UFA and still dealing with long-haul Covid. He can’t train, he gets gassed and can’t catch his breath.

I hope the league comes up with a mechanism to allow these guys to be covered by the league's insurance even if they're not under contract ... because Brando won't end up being the only one in this situation.

NYR and Kappo Kakko have reached a deal on a two-year extension with an AAV of $2.1 million.
That's more of a reasonable comparable for Necas IMO. His production has been a bit lower than Necas, but the long term expectations are roughly the same at this point. It would certainly land him between Puljujarvi and Kakko ... somewhere between $3.1 mil and $2.1 mil.

And that's fair for both sides...Kakko and Jesse P are both good comparables for Necas and ironically both of those guys drive their fanbases as nuts as Necas does for all of us!!!

No irony involved, really. All three are creative, offensive minded, talented players absolutely oozing potential but none of them have really found consistency in the toughest league in the world. There's always a layer of those guys in the NHL. They drive fan bases, coaches and GMs bonkers and 90% of the time they never "get there." But the one guy in ten who does eventually find his way into the light makes all the others a lot of money along the way.

Sheng Peng, who covers the Sharks for NBC Sports California says Ryan Warsofsky is joining the Sharks as an assistant, running the D and PK.

Adidas won’t renew their NHL uniform and apparel deal when it expires after the 2023-24 season. The league has told other companies that the rights are available. Adidas was paying at least $70 million per year for the rights.

I think that's now five consecutive uniform and apparel contracts that weren't extended. The NHL must be one hell of a partner.

Vegas announced today that Robin Lehner will be out for the season, as he needs to undergo hip surgery.

Vegas is so far over the cap that LTIR-ing Lehner's $5 million cap hit doesn't even get them in the black. The only NHL goaltender that they have under contract is Laurent Brossoit, and their prospect Logan Thompson badly outplayed him last season ... by being slightly better than mediocre. Unless they plan to platoon those two, something's got to change between the pipes in Vegas.

They looked a lot like last year’s protocols.
From what's I've seen from the reporter types, the biggest change is that teams now have an option to fine players who can't be available for games because they aren't in compliance with vaccine requirements. That impacts games in Canada, and only effects a small-ish number of players.

Question for the masses, I see that NHL TV has essentially gone the way of the dinosaur in the U.S. So does an ESPN + subscription equate to what the NHL offers now for their full season streaming service? Will most out of market games be available on ESPN +? I usually do the Directv NHL Centerice subscription but leaning towards just bundling my Disney Plus with the Hulu and ESPN + subscription if all the NHL games are streamed now on ESPN +

I can't remember if you're local to Raleigh or not. If so, you're going to need a VPN or something to circumvent the geo-blocking because local broadcasts have to go through Bally. Otherwise, yeah ... I think you're good with ESPN+ and you'll even get the option to watch the other team's broadcast if Maniscalco gets on your nerves more than the other team's homer moron.

I have the bundle and had access to all games on espn+. You'll need TNT on hulu but that's included. Occasional blackout when a game is on NHL Network.

The bundle is worth it even though hulu live blows goats.

I have proof

Thanks JB and Habsy. I am local in the Cary/Apex area and will not be cord cutting so I still plan on watching the Canes locally on Bally...mostly will use the ESPN + subscription for all the other out of market games as opposed to paying to renew the NHL Centerice subscription. I was just not familiar last year with ESPN + pretty much taking over everything for the NHL in that domain.

Yes, between Bally for the Canes and ESPN+, you've got everything covered and don't need Center Ice. The nice part of ESPN+ is all the other non-NHL content that comes with it.

Yeah ... you should be good then. I've had that bundle since they started the Disney+ service (I get a DEEP discount through work) and it was nice to have the games on ESPN+ last season, and if you have cable then you certainly have TNT for the 2 or 3 times that will matter. And yeah ... ESPN+ gives you the 30 for 30 back catalog which is great in and of itself. They do some original hockey content too, but ... meh.
