2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

Alexandre Texier will not play for Columbus this season, per the advice of the NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program. He fractured a finger last January and was granted a leave of absence in March. He will be permitted to sign a 1 year contract to play in Europe. He played 2 seasons for KalPa in Finland before coming to North America. He’s in the last year of a 2 year/$3.05 million contract that will not count against the Jackets’ cap.

Weird. When they announced his leave, they said stuff about family issues in Europe. I mean, I wish him the best and hope he gets whatever help he needs, but the public facing communication on this has been very strange. FWIW, Texier was starting to round into a solid middle six forward before he got hurt last year. Dude was a freaking menace on the forecheck.

The Checkers have named old friends Bobby Sanguinetti and Jared Staal as assistant coaches. Sanguinetti played 40 games for the Canes in 2 stints, but more importantly to Charlotte, he came back to the Checkers in 2018-19 after playing the previous 2 seasons in Europe. He played a total of 155 games for the Checkers. Staal played 215 games for the Checkers and spent the last 3 seasons as an assistant for ECHL Orlando.

A very Jim Rutherford Era Hurricanes thing to do. Good on those guys. I hope it works out well for them.

Staal has really paid his dues in coaching, working for Okanagan for a few years before moving to Orlando. Sanguienetti is a bit of a surprise, when the Checkers called him in the 2018-19 season, he was retired and living in Wilmington. He played the 19-20 season in Germany before it ended as due to Covid. Maybe he did some scouting last year, but there was no indication that he was headed down that path. But by all accounts, he was an invaluable veteran pickup for the 18-19 Checkers as they loaded up for their Calder Cup run.

I understand that Bobby was working for one of the combined scouting services last year. Staal has also been a long time skills coach for the Okanagan camp program in the summers. He really has put in the time to get prepped for the coaching ladder. Nothing wrong with the "guys you know" approach, especially in the minors. I was just doing that longtime Canes fan thing ... and also that front office in Charlotte can still go pound sand.

The Penguins have signed coach Mike Sullivan to a 3 year contract extension. Sullivan does remarkably consistent work in Pittsburgh, so this is no surprise ... although it does lock him down for whatever comes from their summer contract decisions. You know, where they pretended that Malkin and Letang weren't a million years old and signed them to long-ish extensions. The Pens are REALLY leaning into business as usual this summer despite a roster with an average age above 29 years old.

Slugs sign Tage Thompson to a 7 year/$49,999,999 extension that starts in the 2023-24 season. He gets a $2 million signing bonus in year 1, all other years are straight salary. Starting year 2, he submits a 5 team no trade list. He’s in the last year of a 3 year/$4.2 million contract,

UCONN UCONN UCONN (sorry, don't get to throw that around much for NHL players).
That contract is nuts given how little Thompson did prior to last season. Congrats to him!

A $50 million commitment to Tage Thompson? That's f*cking insane! (Makes Svech's deal look brilliant.)

Cue Owen Wilson voice .... wow. And look, I'm pretty sure that, having finally arrived as an offensive force, Thompson will continue on his course as a fine player. He's always had the tools, after all. But going 7 years and committing to a modified NTC at age 25-26 on a guy who's had one even remotely impactful season? I know that Buffalo has to over-pay to keep guys given their market realities, but jeez. Plus, wouldn't you want to feather the throttle on that thing and at least structure it so he's trade-able at some point before he's 31? If he bombs, you're eating that whole contract. Guaranteed.

The Pegula's apparently have lots of money to throw away...yesterday, in addition to handing out that Tage Thompson whopper, the Bills paid TE O.J. Howard $3.125 million just to go away after signing the guy this summer for $3.5 million as a free agent only to see him come to training camp looking slow and uninterested and not even making the team.

Natural gas pricing rebounded due to events in Europe and I think they settled some of their legal issues, so ... yeah. The Pegulas are more flush than they have been

Wild trade dman Dimitry Kulikov to the Ducks for future considerations. He’s headed into the last year of his contract with a $2.25 million cap hit and actual. Apparently, this was to create room for Calen Addison to make the team.
