2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

Today must have been PTO day. The Leafs signed Zach Aston-Reese and the Ducks signed Nathan Beaulieu and Nikolas Brouillard.

Aston-Reese will almost certainly make some team's roster even if it doesn't end up being Toronto's. He had a rough time after being moved to Anaheim last season but if he's anywhere near his game he's one of the better pure defensive forwards in the league

I'm not sure we really pointed out that Carolina also made some additions to their scouting staff. They added a compliance specialist, Earl Schwartz, and named two additional pro scouts ... Ellen Etchingham and Sidney Morin. Morin is an American International who recently wrapped up her pro career with Minnesota in the PHF. Nice to have some female perspective in the scouting room.

Nice to have some female perspective in the scouting room.
Not against having some female scouts but why is it nice?

I think they should have the best scouts they can get. Not sure how male/female perspective enters into that or what bearing it has on talent evaluation.

Different points of view are good in a scouting room. The ladies know the sport but don't have as much of that "I played with his Dad" crap in their baggage. Carolina has really benefitted from moving away from the old boys club approach to scouting, and this is another step in that direction. Just another move to taking advantage of under-appreciated or under-utilized resources.

The Checkers continue reuniting the band. Riley Nash signed a 2 year AHL contract with the Checkers. He played there from 2010-13 with current teammate Zac Dalpe, current assistants Jared Staal and Bobby Sanguinetti and head coach Geordie Kinnear was an assistsnt.

While I'm always less than convinced by the "at least we know the guy" approach to roster building, Nash looked like a decent enough 13th NHL forward once he got healthy and finally played his way into game shape. As a veteran presence on an AHL team, he should be truly useful

He was a beast for the Crunch last year before joining the Lightning. He was a point per game guy. He could also be following former teammates Sanguinetti, Staal and Pat Dwyer and starting the transition into coaching.

Wouldn't shock me if Nash ends up coaching. He always had a very Jeff Daniels vibe. Always professional, but never quite skilled enough to make it count on the scoreboard.

Jeffbear’s favorite bridge troll has a new job. The Kingston Frontenacs have hired Jack Martin as senior advisor to the hockey operations team.

Frontenac's leadership (probably): Look, we need a guy to make dead sure that we're ready to play the most boring hockey the CHL has ever seen. We want to defend first, second, third and last. We need to trap like they award goals for forced neutral zone turnovers. We need to make sure our paying customers are so devoted to sport that they're willing to watch paint dry on a nightly basis.

The Universe: We have just the man. Err ... he's more troll than man, but you get the point.

Seriously. If you ever wonder whether or not people complaining about "hockey culture" have a point, then look no farther than the fact that this fun-hating cretin and Torts just keep getting paychecks.

This response is what happens when a pitcher grooves a fastball.

The Flames signed wing Sonny Milano to a PTO. He had 14 goals, 20 assists for Anaheim last season but was not given a qualifying offer.

The Rangers signed dman Matt Bartkowski to a PTO. He played for Wilkes-Barre Scranton on an AHL contract last year. He spent most of the previous 2 years playing for the Iowa Wild in 2 way contracts. He’s played 256 NHL games for eBoston, Vancouver, Calgary and Minnesota

Oilers signed dman Jason Demers and forward Jake Virtanen to PTOs. Both played in the KHL last season. Virtanen was acquitted of sexual assault in July.

Speaking of the KHL, Cap Friendly indicates that the Canes have signed LD Grigori Dronov to a PTO. He played the last 4-5 seasons for Magnitogorsk in the KHL. Presumably, a 24 year old guy with that amount of pro experience can at least compete for a 5/6 role with DeHaan

Apologies if somebody else noticed this and I missed the post.

Oh, and Virtanen can pound sand. I'm glad somebody else took the hit on that one, because there were a couple of rumors about Carolina kicking those corroded tires. Pass.

Dronov is playing in the Prospects Tournament. To be honest, I didn’t notice him one way or the other today.
