2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

Julien Gauthier and Alex Georgiev want out of NYR. Gauthier 1st round Canes pick in 2016, pretty much a bust.

Also Ryan Strome and Andrew Copp will be available as free agents
I think Strome will end up as a free agent because Chytil is ready to supplant him as their 2C, but I'm not so sure about Copp. Larry Brooks "reporting" that those two and Vatrano will definitely be testing the market doesn't really mean anything aside from him parroting their agents ... which is a thing Brooks does every summer. They may all eventually end up on the open market, but it would surprise me if NYR lets Copp walk without making a strong offer of their own. He's a perfect fit for Gallant's systems and they can't just go back to being a 2 line team again if they're serious about contending.

The tricky bit with NY's summer is what they end up doing with Kakko. With only $10 mil and change to play with, they've got to be careful with him, and I'm pretty sure he won't be too thrilled with getting benched for a Game 7 for what seemed to be really scapegoat-ish reasons. That's going to get a little dicey, I think.

Strome is coming off 2 years/$9 million, Vatrano 3 years/$7.6 million, Copp 1 year/$3.64 million. Besides Kakko, who doesn’t have arbitration rights, they need a backup goalie, Georgiev is a RFA with arbitration rights. So that $10 million is going to be eaten up quickly. It’s even worse for them next year, they have Chytil, Lafreniere and Miller to deal with, but they have $3.4 million in dead money coming off their cap.

Yeah, all of which makes me wonder if Kakko is in play. I suspect he might be. Put it this way, if Gallant has any sway then you know they're rather spent Kakko's money on Copp.

Ryan McDonagh to the Preds for Phillipe Myers and wait for it…Grant Mishmash! Great salary dump for Tampa to free up that precious cap space!

So tired of teams helping them out. Squeeze a high pick out of them. Should cost at least a second.
Yeah, but this time Nashville at least gets McDonagh before he's completely cooked. It's a bailout, but not as ridiculous as some have been. I bet McDonagh retires before it gets too, too ugly. But yes, at least take a decent pick for your troubles.

Kevin Weekes says that Mike Grier will be named Sharks GM tomorrow. He was a Devils assistant for 2 years and then a hockey operations advisor for the Rangers. He was also a scout for the Blackhawks.

Sharks seemed hell bent on hiring a former player of fairly recent vintage. I mean, it's gonna be a PR job for the next 4-5 years so maybe that makes sense. Go fan friendly on the public face and find some number crunchers to try and get out of contract hell.

The finalists were rumored to be Grier, who retired in 2011, Scott Mellanby (2007) and Ray Whitney (2014). Mellanby had been a AGM in Montreal for 7 years before resigning in November 2021. Whitney has been in various scouting and player personnel roles.

The Coachella Firebirds, AHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, have named Jessica Campbell as assistant coach. She’ll be the first woman behind the bench as a coach.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have promoted Hayley Wickenheiser to AGM. She’s still a practicing physician, isn’t she?

Interesting note on Mike Grier. His older brother Chris is the Dolphins GM. Two brothers, GMs of teams in different leagues. Pretty remarkable. Unlike his brother, he never played professionally, he played 2 years in college and then was an undergraduate assistsnt. Their father was also a team executive, spending 16 years in the Houston Texans organization And several years with the Patriots as both coach and executive.

Andrew Cogliano re-signs with the Avs, 1 year/$1.25 million. He came off a 1 year/$1 million contract originally signed with the Sharks.

Pens re-signed Casey DeSmith, 2 years/$3.6 million. He was coming off a 3 year/$3.75 million contract.

Maybe we will get some trades and action tomorrow with the lead up to the draft but things have been pretty quiet in the league so far this week. I would expect old JR to be working the phones hard on a JT Miller trade between now and tomorrow night.

The time up to the draft should result in some trades being made. IE if Chicago is going to trade DeBrincat, they are going to want to get a 1st round pick in this draft as part of the package.

And Pierre Dorian says the Sens first rounder is in play.

Bryan Marchment has died at the tender age of 53. Was a scout for the Sharks and attending the draft in Montreal.
Marchment played part of one season with the Whalers after being acquired in a trade. Before the next season began, Marchment ended up being lost as compensation to Edmonton for the Whalers signing restricted free agent Steve Rice. Like just about every move the Whalers made in the 90s, that was a terrible move.

Bryan Marchment was a dirtbag and cheap shot artist but when he was on YOUR team, like most of these pesky dirtbags, you loved him a bit more. The memory that stands out the most for me about Marchment was during the Whalers Season ticket holder 'picnic' before the 94-95 season. I was there with a friend and when we were at the signing table with Marchment, he asked Marchment about a pretty nasty skirmish that had occurred during the previous season and if Marchment was looking for revenge. Marchment looked up and said "Oh yeah, I already have the date of our next game with him circled on my calendar'.

Marchment ended up being lost as compensation the following week to Edmonton. There was also a lockout that effectively delayed that season as well, from October through early January so there was a long delay from the time of the pre-season picnic in August and the actual regular season that year. The Whalers of course, did not make the playoffs and Steven Rice scored 11 goals in 40 games.

Back in the day, another Whalers 'Season Ticket Holder event' was 'Breakfast with the Whalers'. The Whalers players would be lined to serve you a buffet style breakfast. Really my main memory from THAT event was Jimmy Carson looking like he was hating every minute of his life. I haven't seen a player out in a public setting ever look more miserable than Jimmy Carson did at that event.

Marchment represented a completely different era of NHL hockey.

Geoff Sanderson at the first "Skate with the Canes" event in 97 has entered the chat.

Dude was "FML, just stay away from me" on skates that night.
