2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

OK, so if you project that out in Carolina terms, Horvat cost NYI a protected first rounder, Teravainen (we don't really have a Beauvillier equivalent, but his usage for the Isles was close to Turbo's and the money is similar) and a middling center prospect ... let's say Rees or Suzuki. Yeah, that's not exactly a gold rush but it's not terrible either. If I'm Waddell I'd have only been in that conversation if I was convinced on being able to sign Horvat to an extension.

Keep in mind ... this draft is DEEP. Like, so deep you're likely to get what's normally 10-15 talent late in the 1st round.
And If I'm Horvat or his agent, why on earth would you be any hurry to sign an extension right now when you can take this to UFA shopping season in July and check all the boxes he wants in regards to money, term, team, location, proximity to family, etc...Captain Lou will tell the fans on the Island he wants to sign him to an extension, but that is certainly no slam dunk at all.

That's the risk Lou's running. Here's the thing though ... he's got a great market and has fixed the biggest negative for players when they moved into a modern building that's actually in their market. He has a hard time convincing free agents, but less trouble convincing players who are already there to extend. So ... I get it. He's happy enough to dump Beauvillier's contract on the Canucks, and the prospect isn't exactly a huge risk. What he's risking is that pick against being able to extend a legit first line scoring forward. A thing he's had all sorts of trouble attracting. Again, I get it.

And Horvat's agent should absolutely make them pay a premium for the extension. It's not leverage if you don't use it.

Horvat's agent needs to remember that it's still going to be a tight cap next season. If he comes out looking for $9 million+ per, there are few teams that have will have that cap room and even fewer that are a 'Bo Horvat away from being a contender' or would be willing to spend that much cap room on a career 2nd line center.

But it only takes one sucker to overpay.

The Isles making this deal doesn't make sense to me the more I look at it.

1) The Isles have ton of guys north of 30 with varying length contracts and aren't a team on the rise.
2) Horvat might (long shot) get them into the playoffs, but they're not winning a series
3) They didn't sell the farm, but it's a lot if he doesn't re-sign
4) If I'm Horvat and 3 months away from being a UFA, I'm not signing in NYI, I'm 100% going to market.

In theory, if the Islanders fall apart they could trade Horvat somewhere else before the deadline. I doubt that is their plan, but the deadline is still more than a month away.

The Teddy Bear Toss at the Hershey Bears game on Sunday brought in a staggering 67,309 bears. Posted attendance was 10,583, so lots of people strolled in with 6 or more bears.

Vegas forward Mark Stone out indefinitely after undergoing back surgery. The Knights are already using more than $13 million of LTIR, adding Stone opens a huge slot for them.

It's Vegas so they'll go do something expensive and dumb ... but you have to wonder what their prospects think when they get drafted by Vegas. You're either going to grow into cheap bottom 6 filler or get traded away for some soon to be broken down expensive vet. Woo freaking hoo.

The Isles signed Horvat to an 8 year $8.5 million AAV extension. That probably means he’s staying; it’s one thing to trade for term, it’s another to commit to 8 years.

No way Lou moves him after signing Horvat to that deal. First off, it's a LOT of money for a 2nd line player. Secondly, Lou just doesn't do stuff like that. I think all that "flip him at the deadline" talk was nonsense anyway. The kind of long shot stuff media people with big imaginations think makes sense but in fact happens once a freaking decade. If that often.

Lou must think the cap is gonna grow exponentially.
It kind of has to grow at some point. It generally reflects economic trends in other markets, despite Bettman's best efforts to never make any real money from a TV deal.

Even so, we all know where this is heading. Horvat will revert to career norm eventually and will be a very expensive second line center on the Island until well into his mid 30s. If that reminds you of half their roster, it should.

I found this on Twitter

In three years, the Islanders are going to have:

30 year old Horvat making 8M
35 year old Lee making 7M
34 year old Nelson making 6M
35 year old Palmieri making 5M
34 year old Pageau making 5M
34 year old Cizikas making 2.5M

Keep in mind though that the cap is going to start increasing by more than the $1 million per year it’s been increasing by as early as next year, after the pandemic-related escrow is paid off. It could be north of $90 million in 2 years.

Be that last part as it may, I do NOT want to be paying a combined $13 million to Anders Lee and Brock Nelson in three years time. Yuck.

Frank Seravalli tweeted that sources have told him that current US Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh will be installed as thr new Executive Director of the NHLPA in the next few days. He’ll be replacing Donald Fehr, who was essentially forced out last spring But continued in the role until a replacement was named.

Walsh served 2 terms as mayor of Boston and is a long time Bruins season ticket holder. He’ll be the first executive director without a legal background.

Slugs sign Dylan Cozens to a 7 year extension with a $7.1 million AAV. He’s in the last year of his entry deal and has already surpassed last season’s goals and assists in only 49 games.

FWIW, Walsh resigned as Sec. Labor today.

I thought Cozins really grew up last season. He didn't produce consistent offense but the rest of his game came together. Him building on that and starting to produce counting stats is a big step. At 21 years old, they've got him locked up through the majority of his prime and Buffalo kind of has to do that when they hit on a winner.
