2022 NHL Playoffs Round Two Series Thread ... Canes vs Rangers

I'll insert the opponent's name after it's decided tonight. In the meantime, would you rather match up with the less balanced, lesser experienced opponent with the better goaltending in New York or the very experienced, slightly better balanced opponent with an iffier goaltenders in Pittsburgh? Oh, and probably Crosby. I'm torn. Carolina matches up pretty well with both, as depth is an advantage either way. Despite recent results, my brain says you'd rather avoid Sheshterkin and MSG.

I'm voting Pittsburgh, but not for anything on the ice, just for the narrative of avenging former playoff losses... First round took care of 2019 and 2020 (and 1999, ugh), Next round 2009... 3rd round 2021.... And I'm sure the Whalers lost to Quebec somewhere along the line... '87 maybe? Yup... Stastny goal in OT of game 6. There ya go... all the way to the C*p (Although by the same construct, EDM fans would probably like another shot at US.)

But yeah, Shesterkin going all Vezina on us would be something to avoid.

Honestly ... this is the only thing I've got my eye on right now. He's been good without being great in his first playoff series, but the last thing this specific Canes team needs is a goalie of that caliber going off on them, and I'm thinking he's just going to get better the longer the Rangers hang around.

That‘s where I land too. Shesterkin’s save % is .906, 13th best among all goalies in the playoffs. What we don’t know is if he bounces back to regular season form, or turns into Jose Theodore, who was never the same after the Canes wrecked him in the 2002 Playoffs. But I’d rather take my chances with the Pens.

Canes went 2-1 against the Pens, 3-1 against the Rangers. Raanta played all 3 against the Pens, we went 1-1 against Jarry, 1-0 against DeSmith. Andersen played 3 of 4 against the Rangers, Kochetkov played the other, we went 2-1 against Shesterkin, 1-0 against Georgiev.

I’ll take the Pens over the Rangers because I think the Rangers talent level and goaltending is better than what the Pens have. Rags can go off offensively and I think the Canes match up slightly better vs Pens. Full credit to Jarry so far tonight coming in after five weeks injured and playing pretty damn well.

Pens had a 3-1 lead in the series, then had 2-0 leads in games 5 and game 6 and led tonight late and the Rags won't go away...

Brock McGinn with the penalty 3 minutes into OT.

Edit: Obviously Brock didn't want to face us..
