2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

And then the Coyotes were immediately eliminated from playoff contention. In other futility news, according the most trusted information source—ChatGPT—the record for most games played before playing a playoff game is 1004, held by Andy Culligan, who made his playoff debut with the Bruins in 2004. Our old friend Jeff Skinner currently sits at 996 and could tie the record in the Sabres’ final home game this year and break it on the road in Florida. Congrats Jeff!
Hmmm...I have no recollection of an Andy Culligan and can't find him in hockeydb.com. He is not listed as anyone who played for the Bruins in 2004.

Further research using ChatGPT claims that the correct answer is Brian Campbell, a defenseman for the Sabres, Sharks, Blackhawks, and Panthers between 1999 and 2017. ChapGPT is clearly wrong here, however, as Campbell played 107 playoff games.

Former Cane Ron Hainsey was at 907 before Ron Francis did him a solid and traded him to Pittsburgh in 2017

The Canes got back the immortal Danny Kristo, a 26 year old forward who never played in the NHL. That was his last season in North America, he’s been through 8 leagues in 7 countries since, currently playing in England. We also got the 62nd overall pick in the 2017 draft, which was traded to Vegas at the expansion draft for Trevor Van Riemsdyk and a 7th round pick in the 2018 draft. That pick was traded to the Rangers for their 7th rounder in 2019, which the Canes used to draft Massimo Rizzo.

So the Canes turned Ron Hainsey into 3 years of TVR and TDA 2.0

There were 2 Brian Campbells albeit with different spelling and neither is the correct answer. The Brian Campbell we all know and loathe made his playoff debut in his 3rd full season, 2005-06. The other is Bryan Campbell, who played 260 NHL games from 1967-72 and played in 22 playoff games. He jumped to the WHA and played 433 games from 1972-78 for the Philadelphia/Vancouver Blazers, Cincinnati Stingers, Indianapolis Racers and Edmonton Oilers,

The Caps and Wizards move to Alexandria is dead, at least for now. The city stopped negotiations with AOL Ted. The proposal never passed the Virginia Senate, with the chairperson of the Finance and Appropriations Committee stripping arena language from the budget and failing to put forth a bill creating a sports and entertainment authority.

And here is the update on the DC end of the franchises. Monumental Spoets and the city are close to signing a $515 million letter of intent for renovations. It will include a 200,000 square foot expansion of the arena into the Gallery Place space and the creation of an entertainment district in Chinatown and safety and transportation upgrades.

Best as I can tell, the new stuff is mostly the entertainment district plan, which will dramatically change the nature of foot traffic on the street outside the arena and potentially solve the (legit) public safety issues. Otherwise it's the same update/renovation package that was belatedly put on the table before. So, bottom line ... yet another pro sports franchise owner leverages a potential move to get what he wants/needs for a more profitable arena environment. So, nothing to see here really.

Yeah, the only difference is the incremental $15 million.

BTW ... looking at the standings with roughly 10 games left for everyone, it's an absolute mosh pit for the President's Trophy with up 7 teams legitimately in play. That's as big a cluster for top point total at this stage as I can remember. Secondly, although the entirety of the hockey press is still patting Vegas on the back for their big deadline deals, the Golden Knights have been ... checks notes ... just OK since the deadline and look destined to finish 8th in the West. Even if they sneak into 3rd in their Division they're still gonna face a really good first round opponent. The press may be seduced by Vegas' big swings on the trade floor but the kids have a different label for that guy ... a try hard.

But they’ll get Mark Stone, Tomas Hertl, Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri back from LTIR

Speaking of their LTIR list ... has anybody checked to see Robin Lehner is still alive?

Also, not for nothing but nobody seems to care that the Leafs and Lightning both have higher payrolls than Vegas. More than $5 million more in Toronto's case.

Lehner no word but there was a recent sighting of Matt “LTIR” Murray at Leafs practice last week!!!

Don't really get why anyone would care about Toronto's LTIR situation.

Muzzin will probably never play hockey again. Murray is pretty unlikely to start in the playoffs. Klingberg is definitely done. And we only added shitty depth defensemen at the deadline.

That's not really anything like Vegas' situation.

I don't. I also don't care about Vegas' LTIR situation and don't think anyone else should either. That was the point.
