2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

So ... other stuff was happening last night.

Toronto came back from the dead with a 3-2 win in Boston. Mark Stone came back from the dead with the opening goal of a 4-3 Vegas win over Dallas that felt utterly predictable, and the Oilers put up 7 goals on the tar pit zone trap of the Kings as McDavid notched 5 assists. So, just a normal night in the NHL.

Dallas prize for winning the division and finishing with the most points in the West was the defending Cup champions…not a great reward overall and they will have their hands full.

Wee Willie Nylander AWOL that has driven the media in Toronto nuts…but Matthews carried the Leafs by himself with a monster game.

Oilers looked ready from the get go and McJesus with a five point night to kick the playoffs off.

Demko out tonight and maybe longer with a lower body injury. Tocchet says it’s unrelated to the knee injury that kept him out for 14 games from March 13—April 13. Casey DeSmith was 2.89/.886 in 29 games, 27 starts as the backup. Arturs Silovs was recalled from the AHL and will back up. He was 2.47/.881 in 4 games while Demko was out.

Without Demko, Vancouver looked VERY ordinary last night. That series might be in for the long haul

Florida eaked out an OT winner to hold serve at home against Tampa, but they're stuck in a one goal decision cycle again. Game 3 in that series is massive.

Speaking of holding serve at home, NYR took a 2-0 lead over the Caps, but Washington at least looked like a pro hockey team last night. On the other hand, Winnipeg was a hot mess, dropping Game 2 to the Avs by a messy 5-2 final score. The Jets have a ton of guys out, and it looked last night like they need every one of them.

For those who watched the Florida series last night, everyone’s favorite douche bag Sam Bennett looked like he broke his hand blocking a shot and Gustav Forsling got tangled up and his leg looked wonky the rest of the night. Two big injuries if those two go down for the Panthers.

If you subscribe to The Athletic, Katie Strang has a great article about the failings of Alex Meruelo.

People accuse Strang of being some sort of assassin, but honestly ... freaking Meruelo basically jumped off of a building, at least in terms of being a sports team owner. This mop-up article is objectively fairly kind, in terms of tone.

The Sharks whacked head coach David Quinn and announced that head athletic trainer Ray Tufts would not return after 20+ years with the organization. Quinn probably never should have left BU, he made the playoffs once in 3 years with the Rangers, losing to the Canes in the 2020 qualifying round and his Sharks teams were dismal, winning a total of 41 games in 2 seasons.

Quinn was supposed to be a tactician and good with youth ... and was neither. Turns out that modern college hockey is 90% recruiting. Who knew? The Sharks were obviously hoping he'd stick around through the rebuild as they start to filter draft picks into the league now that they've wrapped up the slow demolition of that stupid roster, but they were absolutely formless this season. It's not so much the results, but they honestly didn't play a recognizable system of any kind.

The radio stations Alex Meruelo owns are clients of my company. I'd like to continue to do business with them, so I will not publicly confirm or deny any of the allegations of what dealing with a Meruelo-owned organization is like.

Yeah, you don't really need to at this point. His NHL track record sort of screams for itself. I mean NHL in Mullett Arena? O.K..

Oh, I know. He's in construction/development as well and has a VERY bad reputation in that world.

If the Leafs bow out again, Tavares and/or Marner could—really, should—be available. Of course the Leafs being the Leafs would expect no less than McDavid, McKinnon and Bedard in return.

Steve Dangle pointed out that given recent history, the Leafs aren't likely to bow out against the B's until after they force Game 7.
