2023-24 Premier League Thread

Everton was docked 10 points in the standings for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. The Premier League referred their case to an independent commission in March and a hearing was held last month. They become only the 3rd Premier League club to suffer a points deduction. Portsmouth was docked 9 points in 2009-10 for entering relegation and Middlesbrough was hit with a 3 point deduction in 1996-97 for not playing a fixture against Blackburn.

They‘re appealing the decision and one of their arguments will likely be that the penalty is disproportionate, that entering administration is more serious than a FFP breach. They’ll also point to the fines, rather than points deductions, handed to the 6 clubs involved In the Super League discussions. And of course, Chelsea and Man City regularly flaunt spending rules.

Absolutely insane considering the scale of the charges against City and Chelsea. This feels like the joke people make any time there are allegations against a major college program that Cleveland State or some other equivalent better watch out cause the NCAA is about to really come down hard on them.

Sadly, when it came to the NCAA that was an observation, not a joke. Same is true for the FA.

Or, as Everton supporter Luke DeCock noted this morning, “The Premier League got so mad at Manchester City and Newcastle it docked Everton 10 points.”

For those not in the know, Luke DeCock is a sports columnist for the Raleigh News & Observer.

Yeah, but in truth Everton broke he rules, chose not to fight it and took their punishment. City, Chelsea, Newcastle, etc have all been fighting and/or just delaying their cases.

I think you mean (in Portsmouth's case) for entering administration. I remember that: it was the start of such dire times, the club was relegated after that season, and suffered relegation all the way to League Two! They were close to being wound up, too, IIRC. Now they sit top of League One. Hoping some day they make their way back.

As for the Toffees, most Reds I know aren't gloating at the misery of their "across the park" rivals, they're far angrier at the lack of action vs City and Chelsea. But as jeff point out above, the Toffees are "taking their lumps" instead of fighting back. I understand the right of City and Chelsea to use the legal system to fight against perceived injustice but sometimes, it feels like the wheels of justice tilt too much in favor of the wealthiest. :(

I’m not sure where the notion of Everton cooperating came from. They were charged in March and there was a hearing last month for which the penalties were announced. They said they’ll appeal so NOW the fighting starts.

Entering administration, bankruptcy, potato, potahto.

Their 2006-07 season had been chronicled in the book “Bloody Confused” by American sportswriter Chuck Culpepper who, suffering from burnout covering American sports, moved to England and adopted Portsmouth, even though he was living in London.

My understanding is they have been fully cooperating with the investigation to this point unlike City who obviously have been as difficult as possible. I think they have quite a reason to be mad considering it's one violation from two years ago and they got an insane ten point deduction as opposed to City who have over a hundred violations stretching over a decade and have faced no punishment whatsoever. Unless the FA announces that City have a 1000 point deduction, Everton have every right to feel hard done and next time the FA goes to them for cooperation, they are going to rightfully tell them to fuck right off.

They cooperated with the investigation and have acted like a normal member of the FA. They might be appealing, but they aren't hiding or cooking their books, burying the process under several mountains of filings and otherwise slowing down the process every way possible the way the other charged clubs have been.

This Tottenham-Villa game has been incredible….everything we thought it would be (and more, given the state of Spurs atm).

Game could easily have been 4-4 at the half….just mental stuff.

….love this Villa team, and even tho we’re depleted, I think this is still the best game of the Prem season so far.

That game was insanely fun to watch ... or would have been if having a rooting interest meant I was reaching for the Pepto when Emi was making those saves near the end. The ball was pinging all over the yard right from beginning to end and the action really never slowed down. Bonkers stuff.

That was the kind of match I'm almost glad I watched on replay and didn't have to sweat out the result. I'm curious what the record for offsides by opponents is for a season, cause villa are on pace for 184 which feels like it has to be the most. I've never seen a team be so disciplined with their defensive line and so good at catching teams offsides. When people talk about Emery's tactics and what he's brought to Villa, not nearly enough is mentioned about it. Just idiots going, you're going to get in trouble with such a high line cause they have dinosaur brains and can't accept that the sport is different than when they played.

Watching two teams equally committed to playing THAT high a back line was ... something. It almost started to resemble hockey for a bit. In a good way.

….and how about the tactical choices by both Ange & Emery….Ange starts Royal & Davies, two fullbacks at CB, prioritizing mobility over size…and starts GLC in midfield for the first time all year, as well as Kulusevski in midfield for the first time in his Tottenham career (both in over PEH), with Brennen Johnson moved to the left, and those two playing a little interchangeably….Bryan Gill starting out left…..just across the board fresh looks, and for the most part it all worked as good as could be expected.

Then Emery’s two changes at half arguably changed the game, and while we still did good holding possession, I think Villa did a better job containing us, executed their offside trap perfectly when it mattered most, and as the game carried on we simply ran out of steam & the superior Villa squad depth ultimately won out.

….so it really had it all. Beautiful football, incredible end to end chances, amazing saves, beautiful through balls, great tactical decisions both ways that clearly impacted the play. A++ game.

They need to put this game on DVD and offer it for free to any fan that shows the slightest bit of interest in the sport, 🤣…..to me that’s about as beautiful as the game can get.

(Between two clubs who do things “the right way” imo too….as opposed to having infinite funds to just buy every best player available each window, like most of the clubs we have to compete with at the top)
