2023 Draft and UFA Thread

Assuming that whoever drafts at no. 1 will pick Bedard (including us), would you rather get the 1OA and say 10-15 (Panthers pick), or two picks in the top 5?

Even if we pick #2 and the Panthers pick is #10... I'd trade both picks for #1.

The only way I wouldn't trade both picks for #1 is if it was #2 and #3... then I take Fantilli and Carlsson and be happy.

Depends. All things being equal, two in the top-5. Pick the BPA with the better of the two picks and use the second one to trade down & accumulate more 1st/2nd round picks.

But... If we could have the first overall pick and trade Florida's pick for Lafrenière? I'd much prefer that, honestly.

If the draft was held today, assuming there's no changes in the draft order from the standings, we'd pick 6th and 9th.

Buffalo would be picking 13th, 39th, 45th and 60th. I would be very curious if we could swing a trade around the 9th pick for Buffalo's 13th and 39th pick. Maybe give them a later pick like a 4th/5th to even it out.

That would give the 6th, 13th, 38th and 39th pick in a pretty good draft. And if we're able to trade Monahan for another first, Edmundsson for a 2nd, who knows, we could end up with 4 to 6 picks in the first two rounds.

Another candidate would be Detroit. As it stands, they'd pick 14th, 43rd and 46th.

What if Michkov is available w Habs 1st pick say top-5 (non 1OA) for argument sake… take him knowing he’s locked up for next 3-years in KHL, let alone Russia geopolitics, but likely 2nd best talent after Bedard?

I take Michkov if Fantilli or Carlsson are gone too. Otherwise I take one of those guys.

Is Lafreniere’s market value a top-10 pick w ELC expiring?

No way you take him over Fantilli or Carlsson... way too risky.

No point moving out of the top 10 unless its for a plug and play 23 or under ready to play

The 13th overall pick last year for Kirby Dach wasn't a bad deal, but there's an issue sending a first round pick around the same area this year for a player in a similar position?

Lafrenière's stats are superior to Dach's at the same point in their careers, by the way.

Lafreniere would not crack the top five this year.
With hindsight, obviously not, but prior to his draft, I think I'd put him 2nd this draft.

Fantilli, who is going 2nd overall in all likelihood, hasn't stood out at the WJC. Lafrenière was running that tournament.
