2023 Draft and UFA Thread

The 13th overall pick last year for Kirby Dach wasn't a bad deal, but there's an issue sending a first round pick around the same area this year for a player in a similar position?

Lafrenière's stats are superior to Dach's at the same point in their careers, by the way.
That was a great trade by Hugo

I wouldnt say his stats are superior at all , PPG is about the same

This draft is too valuable to mess it up

It's hard to compare players draft over draft and even league over league.

However, what is definitely possible is to compare them in best on best tournaments at the same points in their careers.

Lafrenière, Bedard, Carlsson, Fantilli and Dvorsky are all in the U20 WJC during their first draft season. Since they all play(ed) in different leagues (QMJHL, WHL, NCAA, SEL, & Sweden second tier) there's no direct comparisons, which only leaves us the WJC. If Russia wasn't doing Russia things, Michkov would be part of the discussion as well, alas...

So, let's compare what they did / are doing in the WJC.

Bedard: All time performance, can't say a bad thing about him.
Lafrenière: Dominant at 18 years old, named tournament MVP.
Carlsson: Playing well, holding his own, but he's not a dominant force.
Fantilli: Underwhelming.
Dvorsky: Haven't really paid attention to him.

Based on only their WJC performances, Bedard is grossly superior to everyone, and Lafrenière was much better than everyone else.

I don't know what's going on with Lafrenière in New York, but his production in the NHL so far hasn't been great. I would 100% take a chance on him without even blinking.

Roughly the same, but Lafrenière's scored more often and more consistently. Scored 19 last year, which is nothing to sneeze at.

About right

Where do think Wright would slot this year ?
I think the whole top-5 (Bedard, Fantilli, Michkov, Carlsson, Dvorsky & maybe even Smith) go before every single player last season. Beyond that, who knows. Probably like Habsy said. 9 to 12 ish.

Why's that?

Beyond the lottery, I'm don't think this is a generational draft like 2003 or 2015 was. Historically, more often than not, the statistical probabilities of drafting a top-6 forward or top-4 d-man in the middle of the first aren't that high.

I think there's a much better chance that Lafrenière can turn it around than drafting someone in the mid-first, waiting 2-3 years and hoping he becomes something.

You know there's a d or two that would be taken. I just find them underwhelming. Even Slaf wouldn't be top five and he had a great performance on the world stage.

Okay... you convinced me. If it's a 9 or later I'd be good with trading it for AL.
