2023 Draft and UFA Thread

No I think it's quite possible he drops out of the top 10. I think he goes 8-15.

There are 7 players I feel GMs would rather have with safety of having them in their system. Then you'll get some Fredo GMs too but I don't see him dropping worse than Cole did.

Why's that?

Beyond the lottery, I'm don't think this is a generational draft like 2003 or 2015 was. Historically, more often than not, the statistical probabilities of drafting a top-6 forward or top-4 d-man in the middle of the first aren't that high.

I think there's a much better chance that Lafrenière can turn it around than drafting someone in the mid-first, waiting 2-3 years and hoping he becomes something.
While I’d like to take a flyer on AL, the concern I have is that the Rangers would be making the exact opposite evaluation with a lot more data, and unlike the Hawks, they would much more benefit from AL turning the corner than waiting 3-4 years for their new pick to develop.

I for sure take Michkov with Florida’s pick. Maybe even our own if we’re out of the top 5. That’s the benefit of having top high picks. Plus 3 years is nothing.

Never forget that Drouin was better than Mackinnon at the world juniors
Sure, but everyone had a year & a half to watch Drouin & MacKinnon play together. Poehling was also better than Suzuki at the WJC.

Being excellent or bad at the WJC isn't the only factor to whether Player X will be an excellent NHLer or not, but when you have 5-6 players that are all playing in different leagues, with different ice surfaces, different rule sets, etc. the WJC then becomes the only way you can directly compare them against the same type of competition.

And in response to my question, I would take the 1OA and a lower Panthers pick over two in the top 5 this year only because this is also entertainment and having a generational player on the Habs (the first since Flower) would be highly entertaining.
He is not generational

He needs lottery luck and avoid a shit show like Chicago that has zero to work with

5`9" dominant centers are rare and may need to shift to wing
He's a rare talent. He's 2 inches shorter than Crosby. Might end up within an inch. I've seen him listed at 5'10". He's also thick.

5`10 " is generous

He needs some Jersey type luck where a team jumps multiple spots and the team has some talent to work with

Like I said Kane is his ceiling IMO and there is nothing wrong with that

Exactly my point. Extremely small sample size.

Kane isn't the ceiling. But you are right that nothing wrong with having the second best winger of a generation.
