2023 Draft and UFA Thread

Someone I read, said Fantilli will eventually be a winger, so they ranked Carlsson higher

it's become apparent that all these 5 would be #1 last year

Fantilli is your 200 foot 2 way horse C

Bedard may transition to wing one day

Landed in the worst team rebuild of the last 2 decades , Hawks are barely AHL

maybe but a few scouts have doubts...I have no idea

Dreger the genius chimes in..
I'd move up to 1 or 2... But I don't see the point of moving up to 3 or 4.

I guess if it only costs a 3rd to move up and nab Carlsson cause you're afraid of Michkov... But I'd rather just take Slim Shady.

Pronman says Habs pick that d-man (yuk) and Slim Shady falls to 8

Washington Capitals: Matvei Michkov, RW, SKA St. Petersburg (RUSSIA)

I think this is the alleyway where a Michkov pick becomes realistic, plus or minus one or two picks. In very early discussions with people around the league on him, Washington or Detroit are considered the betting favorites for his landing spot. Does anyone really have a clue though? No. He could be long gone by this pick, or possibly he could drop further.

Everyone is guessing of course. I’m just posting for entertainment value.

He's not dropping to 8. Arizona takes him at 6 if he's there.

The talent drop off isn't even close.

I want Michkov but I wouldn't be shocked if he does slip. I could see some teams opt for a safer asset.

“For sure, it scares us more than it would another prospect because of the obvious reasons, but I couldn’t tell you today,” Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes said Monday, after a long pause, when asked if the organization is afraid of drafting Michkov. “If we determine that Michkov is much more talented than the other available players, we’ll have a decision to make. For now, we have a lot of work to do on his file, first of all as a player and second of all on the risks that would come with it, and from there we’ll make a decision.”
The one thing about Michkov’s contract status that is perhaps being lost in what has already become a raging debate among fans is that it is not only about him not being available until 2026 at the very earliest. For an organization that has banked on its ability to develop players, that believes in its methods and personnel, leaving that development to a third party for three crucially important development years would be a massive leap of faith.

The Canadiens — or any team that drafts Michkov — would have no say on how he is developed from age 18 to 21 and would have to hope that a highly competitive KHL franchise that knows he will one day be leaving for the NHL will do everything to ensure his long-term development will be prioritized over short-term concerns. Will he be allowed to play through mistakes? Will he be given opportunities in big moments? Will his future be seen as more important than the present?
This, I would imagine, is what scares the Canadiens more than anything else about Michkov. It is only by getting a firm handle on him as a player and person that they might alleviate that fear.
