but Dvorak spending time on IR allows the Habs to start the season with Price on the roster....then when Price goes to IR, Habs will be sitting pretty cap wise mid season

yeah you can...you just can't use that money later. So yeah, the Habs lose that Dvorak money (4.5M cap hit) but don't lose Price money (10.5M) so they can get Price money back when they do the IR shuffle later in the year when Dvorak is ready.

So, they would pocket the difference (depending on timing) to gain 5-6M of in season cap space.

Of course, to gain max benefits of IR, the Habs will have to be as close to the league cap limit as possible (minus Dvorak) when the season starts

We're on the same page. I just don't see this regime doing that. They may not have a choice though.
