2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Is there any word on William Carrier or if & when he might be back? It seems like a while since he last played.

That's quite a 4th line the Hurricanes have working with Svech, Jankowski, and Robinson. One might think they could produce compared to other fourth liners.

The Raleigh City Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday to discuss rezoning 81 acres around the arena. The request includes a proposal to allow up to 40 story buildings, up from 12 currently allowed. The plan is broken down into 4 districts. I don’t know if it’s behind a paywall so I’ll summarize.

District A - the East 2000 and 3000 lots and the area around the loading dock wouldn’t be developed immediately but would rezoned to allow 40 story buildings in future development

District B - the primary entertainment district. It encompasses the entire west side, the south side between the arena and stadium and the east 1000 lot. This would include up to 800 residential units and 890,000 square feet of non-residential space. It would be zoned for 15 story buildings.

District C - the area between District B and Edwards Mill would be a mix of retail, restaurants and residential with heights up to 40 stories.

District D - the area near the intersection of Wade and Edwards Mill is a live/work district with the highest concentration of residential and retail. It would allow up to 40 stories.

Carrier has been skating before practices for the last week or 10 days. He’s still probably a ways away.

There's some resistance to the 40 story exemption, but otherwise this has already been basically blessed by staff and the council's zoning committee. Note that I'm not sure I've seen anything that would indicate that the developers would actually build out any 40 story buildings. That's just a height cap so they can go above the 12 story limit and avoid any arbitrary restriction in between.

I hope that west side shit doesn't get built for years, because that's where our football tailgating is.

It's my understanding that the B area will be first, and I can't do anything about your tailgating issues other than to repeat what they've said. Space will be provided. It may not be the space you want, but I'm not in charge of that. Also, you've got at least one more football season before any of this will impact you, from what I understand. So, do it up right this year.

Yeah, the B area is first, there won’t be premier parking in the east 1000 lot for the playoffs.

And it's going to be one of those deals where the leases and revenue from one section will finance the next section. It could be a relatively long time before they break ground on C and D, and I'm not sure anybody actually thinks that A will happen until everything else is done and well established. That's the pie in the sky section of the plan. But if they can lease it out, the B part will get the taps turned on. From there, it will depend on too many factors to even get into.

Why move your arena downtown when you can have downtown move to your arena.

The Hurricanes are set to earn at least 20 out of a possible 28 points for the month of March, depending on the outcome of tomorrow's game with North Raleigh's favorite team, the Islanders who are fighting for their playoff lives.

April could be pretty dicey. Two games against the Capitals who have the #1 seed sewn up at least for the East, but they are fighting hard to get Ovi that goal scoring record and one against a very good Leafs team who are in a heated battle to win the Atlantic. Then there are the trap games against Atlantic teams that are *all* fighting for their playoff lives right now: Detroit, Boston, NY Rangers, Montreal, and Ottawa. Then one against the Sabres who the boys should destroy 11,000 to nothing just to make the Sabres fans feel bad.

Yea, April is a brutal stretch. Would be nice to grab a few points and keep the boys off the injury list.

The Isles are the hottest of the teams chasing that last wildcard slot. Hottest being relative of course. They've won 4 of their last 10, while the rest have won 3. It really does seem like nobody wants that spot, but I think in reality it's just that all of those teams have obvious flaws and are playing like teams like that play. This is basically a repeat of the race for the 8th spot we saw last year, with different teams. Washington got the spot but they more of less just bumbled less than the rest down the stretch. At this stage, you simply cannot count out the Rangers and Islanders simply because they have the goalies most likely to get white hot for a week or two. And that would be more than enough.

Kinda crazy that 5 wins separate the Caps (103), Canes (94), Devils (85), and Rangers (77) right now with 9 left to play (8 for NYR).

The Metro is all but settled, and the Rangers can only hope to cling to WC2. Maybe they can ride the hot goalie, but it'll be a tall order to catch Ottawa (84), never mind Jersey.

I amend my previous post on this topic:

Boston obviously wants nothing to do with the playoffs this year.

They shouldn't. They actually have a full compliment of picks this year and next and 100% should be looking to reload their prospect pool. And if they deal away either of their two first rounders in 26, their fans should revolt ... as opposed to just being revolting. That draft is setting up to be silly deep, and they haven't drafted a real impact player since McAvoy

They drafted Trent Frederic and Ryan Lindgren in the same year as McAvoy. Lindgren was traded to the Rangers in the Rick Nash deal. They drafted Swayman the year after McAvoy. But yeah, woof.

I thought about including Swayman as an impact player but given this season, I don't know what he is anymore. Boston's highlight reel since that 2016 draft that netted them 3 NHLers is basically just Swayman, Lohrei and Urho Vaakanainen.

And as Mike Commodore is fond of pointing out, Lohrei is only 4 shots off the lead at The Masters. He’s at -34, alone in 3rd behind Bertuzzi and Bedard, tied at the top.
