2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Oh, pretty much every reporter seems to agree that Carolina is still trawling for another option in goal. I think they'd jump on a waiver claim or minor prospect trade for an upgrade at either 2G or 3G if they could. IMO they'd be smart to keep looking for a better platoon partner for Kochetkov as well.

James Mirrle at The Athletic ranked every team’s salary cap situation. He’s assuming a $94 million cap, halfway between the “official” estimate of $92.4 million and adding in the new projection of a $9 million increase in the current cap. The team in the best position? Your Carolina Hurricanes. They have $65 million committed for next year and only Burns, Andersen and Orlov as UFAs. The latter 2 are as good as gone, he thinks bringing Burns back on a short term deal makes sense. There are no RFAs on the NHL roster but they’ll have to deal with Drury, Blake, Morrow and Nikishin, if my assumption about his entry level contract is correct, in 2026. PuckPedia shows Nadeau as on the first year of his entry deal, but he played a game last year, just like Blake and Morrow.

The only reason I wouldn't bring back Burns is that you bloody know that Roddy's going to keep running him out there with Slavin for the rest of his life. We're already hampering Slavin's impact and Burnsie's just gonna need more and more help as he ages.

But yeah, we talked about this a lot in the summer. Carolina kept its powder dry by not getting sucked into dumb contracts over the last two cycles, so they're set up for this jump in the Cap. Heck, they were set up for a big roster inflection point even if the Cap only went up the normal $2-3 million. And out of all the guys they let walk for either AAV or term reasons, the only one they really miss is still Trocheck.

And even after being moved to PP2, Burns is still leading the team in ice time.

Yup. And it's not even Christmas yet and Burns is already sliding into the old guy pattern of having nights when he just doesn't have his legs. He's also been a bit slow getting started on daytime games, which is another old fella deal. Brindy has to be forcefully broken away from some guys and he never seems to like it, even though it works out fine. Given the cold blooded calculation this summer on guys like Skjei, Pesce and Turbo, I'm thinking this might be last call for Burn in Raleigh. And that's fine. Staal is gonna hit an age wall here eventually, and you REALLY don't need two guys with cement skates ... especially on a team otherwise built for speed. I love the guy but he's fixing to be 40.

I haven’t seen this burns falloff some of you are seeing. Maybe I’m blind. He’s looked solid to me all season.
It's not dramatic and it's been fairly recent, because he looked great early on. Plus, Slavin is the best coverup partner in the NHL. But you can see him reaching a lot, and trailing behind guys when they spin off the wall after a 50/50 battle because it takes him an extra stride to get moving. Same stuff I saw from him in the playoffs last spring when he just looked tired all the time. Sometimes he struggles to get that snap shot off the wall when he's covering the blueline because it takes him an extra beat to settle his base. He's a smart customer though. He covers it up with good decisions, but on fluid plays he gets beat to his spot a lot on nights when he doesn't have it. The dude is 39 and he's played a purple gajillion shifts at the highest level. It's takes a toll eventually, no matter how good your conditioning.

Also, they've got Boom coming in next season and I REALLY don't want to see them wasting Slavin's late prime covering for Burns as he slows down even more instead of using him to make Nikishin's transition easier.

I was talking to Luke in the press box Saturday….. covered my first game since August when I got diagnosed….he seemed pretty confident we’d see Nikishin this season. Can’t wait to see this kid in Raleigh this year or next.

Nadeau's age is the difference. He signed his entry level deal as a 19 year old and was 19 last season when he played that 1 game. That made him entry level slide eligible as long as he played less than 10 NHL games.

Only players who sign at 18 or 19 are entry level slide eligible. Morrow and Blake were both 21 when they signed.

Also, as I just saw on Twitter, Martin is at 9 games played, if he played another, he‘d have to go through waivers to be sent back. So we might see the goalie yo-yo for a while.

At this point I would hope the Canes are not doing anything because of a fear that some team might claim Spencer Martin off of waivers. His performance since his shutout should be enough to make sure Martin will clear waivers again if/when necessary. Any team claiming Martin off of waivers would be doing the Canes a favor by clearing his salary.

Sebastian Aho 25 Games 7 Goals 19 Assists -6 22 PIMs Already

That pace would lead to 82 games 23 Goals 62 Assists -20 72 PIMs

Aho has never scored fewer than 24 goals in a season. 62 Assists would be a new career high. 72 PIMs would be a career high (by a lot). Aho has never been worse than -1 in a season.

Svech with 25 Games 8 Goals 10 Assists -5 26 PIMs isn't off to a great start either.

Aho was the only Cane named to Finland‘s 4 Nations Cup roster. There was speculation that KK would be named but he wasn’t. Former Canes Haula, Teravainen, Luostarinen and Hakanpaa were named, as was Laine, just back from injury last night. Also in the former Cane category, Tuomo Ruutu was named an assistant coach

Lines and pairings at practice. They’re not skating tomorrow morning, so this is probably what we’ll see in the game.

Svechnikov-Aho-Roslovic
Robinson-Drury-Necas
Martinook-Staal-Jarvis
Carrier-Kotkaniemi-Blake

Slavin-Burns
Orlov-Chatfield
Gostisbehere-Walker

After the game last night, Blend’Amour was asked about shuffling the lines.

Aren't those combos pretty much what he ran with most of last night that didn't work????

See the Brindy quote in the post you referenced? Yes, they are ... and no, shifting lines around even more wouldn't have done jack squat yesterday. It's what's known as gut check time.

I believe he started the game with Necas on the first line, replacing Svech - but I could be wrong. I so want to forget last night's game.
