2024-25 Hurricanes Prospects and Minors Thread

Do the resident cap gurus in here see Nikishin and his agent wanting to get this done quick this season to play soon to burn that extra entry level year? It sure would seem like their camp would have that incentive if at all possible.

I'm no guru, but yes ... absolutely. That's been the trend with ELC guys for a couple of years now. They want to get to a "real" contract as soon as possible and burning an ELC season at the front end does that nicely. That's what Carolina did with their ELC guys last season ... and the Canes tend to be a little bit ahead of these curves

Agreed. I expect every agent and player 20 years or older wants to get that first entry level season booked and completed as quickly as possible. Even if that means that they will not be able to cash in any performance bonuses for that one short season. The faster you are out of the entry level years the better.

UMass Senior center Lucas Mercuri has informed the Canes that he is not signing with them at the conclusion of his season. The Canes are shopping his rights for a draft pick.

The Canes prospect depth at center isn’t so deep anymore. Suzuki, Robidas, Brind’Amour.

IIRC, the Canes had Mercuri on the wing during his development camps and didn't really see him as a center. That might be one reason for why it's been so hard to sign him. Once they end up as seniors in college, it's more like 50/50 on getting them signed because there's likely some reason that they haven't been signed previously. Meh. Best of luck, kid.

I saw somewhere that SKA had put Nikishin on season ending IR over in the KHL. Not sure if that's real or not (since everything out of Russia has to be taken with a grain of salt), or how bad his injury might be. For all I know, the club are shutting him down for something minor to protect his ability to take a stab at Carolina's playoff roster.

There was one more game in the KHL regular season when they put Nikishin on IR. I don't know if season ending IR means just the regular season or the playoffs too?

I think that's when he got his bell rung by that dirty hit to the head, right? I'm going to be forever worried about that hit.

Pretty sure their system works similar to the NHL's and the calendar re-sets in the post season. Nobody seems to think SKA are going to be around very long in the playoffs though. So if they're shutting him down, they might just give him a break on the post season too. We'll see ... and you know better than most about how shaky info out of the KHL can be. For all we know they gave Nikishin a maintenance day and some doofus on the internet overreacted.

Chicago Wolves last week:

Mar 21 Texas L 3-0 Tokarski with the loss
Mar 23 Texas L 5-2 Khazheyev with the loss (pulled after allowing 4 goals in 22 minutes). Nadeau x2 with the goals

So that is 2 straight starts that Khazheyev has been pulled from. His stats now stand at 5-12-0 3.46 GAA .873 Sv%.

Rockford is now only 2 points behind the reeling Wolves for 4th place in the AHL Central division. Fortunately for Chicago, the top 5 teams from the Central make the playoffs and Chicago is 14 points ahead of 6th place Iowa.

Like the Canes, Chicago is inept on the PP. 15.3%. 3rd worst in the entire AHL.

4 Games this week Tue @Rockford, Wed @Iowa, Sat/Sun v. Coachella

Thanks for doing this again. I appreciate the job you do.

The NCAA free agent signings have started and it does not appear like the Canes have dipped their toe in those waters, I know the Leafs have already signed a handful that route since they trade away all their draft picks...

Yeah, barring something unusual I really don't expect college free agents to be a regular part of Carolina's player development system for the next 2-3 years. You can always run into unique situations like with Perets, but given a relatively healthy pipeline and a pretty full basket of picks, there's no need to take the risks you end up taking on college free agents.

Perets probably happened only because he was Skyler Brind’Amourks teammate at Quinnipiac. He had great numbers in 2 seasons as the starter there thouch. Before him the last was Chase Priskie? He had been drafted by the Caps but didn’t sign. He was included in the Haula trade with the Panthers. He played 4 games for the Panthers in 21-22 but has spent the last 2 seasons with Hershey.

That could also be how the Canes found Charles-Alexis Legault. He was drafted after his freshman year at Quinnipiac (Perets and Brind’Amour were seniors). He was eligible for the 2021 draft, the Canes grabbed him in 2023.
