2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Despite watching the NHL for well over 50 years, I am pretty sure I've never seen this call before...

It happened at a Canes game many years ago. The visiting team started the wrong lineup. That was the first and only time I’ve seen it.

The Blues fired coach Drew Bannister and replaced him with Jim Montgomery. Elliotte Friedman says Montgomery got a 5 year contract.

That’s a lot of term for a guy who’s been a head coach twice and hasn’t lasted more than 2 1/2 years at either stop.

He was in St Louis as lead assistant for a couple of seasons after he got fired in Dallas ... and after he got out of rehab. Point being, Doug Armstrong knows the guy well and likes what he brings to the table, which explains both the quick trigger on a coach they had no confidence in and the 5 year deal for Monty.

Elliotte Friedman says it’s clear the Rangers are interested in making moves and Kreider and Trouba are 2 of the names being discussed.

Kreider has 2 years left after this with a $6.5 million cap hit but only $9 million total actual. He has a 15 team NTC. Trouba has 1 year left after this with an $8 million cap hit but $6 million actual each year. He has a 15 team NTC this year and a 12 team NTC next year.

Rags need to feel better about that Shesterkin gigantic extension coming by dumping one of these two ageing high priced contracts...

The Rangers have plenty more players underperforming their contracts:

In 19 games:

Adam Fox... ZERO goals (17 assists) He has 4 more seasons after this one, $9.5 million AAV and NMCs kicking in after this season for 2 seasons then 2 seasons of M_NTC with 16 team no trade lists)

Mika Zibanejad only 4 goals (5 more seasons after this one, $8.5 million AAV, full NMCs)

Vincent Trocheck only 10 points (4 more seasons after this one, $5.625 AAV, NMC for this season, M-NTCs for final 4 seasons (12, 10, and then 2x6 no trade lists)

They also apparently want to run K'Andre Miller out of town too before he has to be paid.

Chris Kreider (9-0) is battling Jack Roslevic (12-1) for the NHL Cy Young.

So then why did they chicken out on moving Trouba during the offseason when they could have gotten some value back? Moving him now would be at fire sale prices. They'd have to retain the max and probably settle for a 3rd rounder or something. Kreider will require retention as well. And they both have movement restriction, which will further complicate matters. This smacks of the Rangers front office trying to light a fire under some players using the press ... again.

The bigger issue is that the age curves for Kreider, Trouba and Zibanejad were 100% predictable and they've waited until the season is underway to start thinking about solutions.

In a backup goalie deal, the Avs send Justus Annunen and a 2025 6th rounder to the Preds for Scott Wedgewood. Neither has been very good this year, Wedgewood is 3.69/.878 in 5 games, Annunen is at 3.23/.872 in 11 games.

Neither of those two are NHL goalies now or ever likely to be, but at least Annunen is only 24. Wedgewood is over 30. The Preds might harbor some sliver of hope their their Finnish goalie whisperer of a goalie coach can get something out of Annunen.
