2024-25 Premier League Thread

And what a different team we looked like in the second half with some actual width from Maatsen and Bailey. All of a sudden there was space in the middle cause wolves had to respect their threat versus Digne and McGinn providing zero threat. Please for the love of my sanity let Maatsen start already.

Yeah, turned out to be more the setup than the heavy legs. They looked like they had plenty of energy once they figured out how to attack Wolves out wide. Nice to see the two striker setup for a good chunk of the game too. If they're gonna hang on to both of them, Unai's got to start figuring out how to get comfortable with playing that way more regularly. Getting Kamara back healthy will help, I think.

Patrick Boyland, who covers Everton for The Athletic, wrote today that The Friedkin Group are close to finalizing the purchase of Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in the club. They pulled out of talks 2 months ago and Crystal Palace owner John Textor began negotiating. But until Textor sold his Crystal palace share, he couldn’t negotiate exclusively. So TFG came back into the picture.

Odds on that deal falling apart before it crosses the finish line? I'd call it 50/50, personally.
I think that’s optimistic.

Man City got the late draw yesterday against Arsenal but took a huge hit today. ESPN and Marca are reporting that Rodri is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Yeah ... that's gonna leave a hug hole in that lineup. Not only is Rodri a remarkably good and consistent player, the guy is a horse who can play hour after hour at a high level. Those guys are not only rare, they're crucial if you're going to seriously complete in multiple competitions at the same time like City does.

Loved that Liverpool put aside the disappointing outing vs Forest (and the injury to Allison) to best Bournemouth 3-0 Saturday. It was a taut affair until the colossal gaffe by Kepa gifting LFC it's first goal. Two minutes later Diaz made it 2-0, then Darwin did what Darwin does: cut in from the left and rifled a shot from outside the box into the far corner to make it 3-0. As Stephen Warnock observed: "He makes the difficult look so easy at times; others, he makes the easy look difficult." That's Darwizzy.

Obviously Villa fans will hate its 2-2, but this has been such an entertaining game.

Gorgeous goal by Delap to tie it up, and even though it was originally gifted to him, Rogers control & give and go with Watkins was majestic.

Always happy for promotion clubs when they get this sort of game in front of their home fans, against a top side.

Arsenal almost tossed away 2 points yesterday, taking a 2-0 lead into half, blowing the lead inside 20 minutes against the flow of play, before winning it in stoppage time. Leicester keeper Mads Hermansen allowed 4 goals and was still man of the match with 13 saves, several of them 10 bell saves.

Yeah, I hated the result but there's no denying that the game was really entertaining. Just two teams having a good old go at one another. I'll say this for Ipswich ... they play ballsy football. I hope they stick.

Was coming back from Vermont today so I won't get to watch it until the replay tomorrow. Starting to get a little aggravated at Emery's unwillingness to change the lineup unless forced to by injury. Jeff, how annoyed am I going to be tomorrow with Digne and Carlos starting over Maatsen and Nedeljkovic?

You're gonna be annoyed about Maatsen for sure. The other side was an issue, but I'm not convinced Ned would have made it better. Something's gotta give on that right defensive flank and I'm not sure the answer is on the roster ... until Cash comes back, at least.

Nedeljkovic? Isn‘t he the Penguins backup goalie? Calder finalist in 2021?

I mostly just refer to him as Kosta myself. Honestly, he has yet to show me a reason why he shouldn't be given a run at the RB role since he's looked really solid in almost all of his appearances and he wasn't sent out on loan. I definitely didn't understand why Boegarde was playing out of position instead of having a natural RB or why we continued to play three CBs while Bailey was out leaving us with zero threat on the right side whatsoever.

Turning on the match now so we'll see how I feel in ninety minutes.

EDIT: Three minutes in and I'm already frustrated with Digne.

I... I don't get it. Digne provides nothing offensively. I'd honestly say he takes away since he's a black hole where promising attacks go to die. Maatsen didn't look great today, but he had ten minutes, so I can't hold that against him when he's been so exciting this season and Digne has been so nothing. I don't know if that second goal doesn't happen if Kosta is at RB and Konsa is at RCB, but it feels less likely. The management of this whole match was a bit of a head scratcher.

It was nice to see Buendia with a really really nice through ball to Duran that was just barely cut out with a great last ditch tackle. Also Philogene got to show off his superpower where he somehow freezes time and makes everyone on the field stop as well. I feel like we did more rotation last year with a thinner side. I know there's another international break coming up, but it's not like we don't have plenty of internationals on our team.
