2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Another thing - these guys looked fucking miserable from the preseason through yesterday.

Do they hate Berube and this system of his? Are they fed up with Tre and his mediocre adds? Has being a Leaf gotten to them?

I don't know what it is we're seeing in their expressions this season, but they never looked like this before.
IDK to me Matthews has always seemed depressed and sorta checked-out.

This is getting so humiliating. Matthews called it "Embarrassing" when they lost to Columbus 5 years ago. Truth is they all need a new start elsewhere. You can tell when they talk (Except Wily). The failure is just crippling at this point

I really don’t get how Marner’s camp looks at the last 6 years of regular season and playoffs and asks for more money than Rantanen just signed for. I know they will, but I don’t get it.

I’d offer him the Nylander contract and when he says no, be glad to have the capspace. You won’t get another 90 point player with it, but you could easily get two guys who score more in the playoffs.
To me Marner and his team did plan on staying and the move was to push for as much money as possible and sign late June. It didn't work.

With some time and space from the disappointment, which we badly need, we do have to also acknowledge that they took the defending champs to seven games after finishing first in the division for the first time, and going deeper into the playoffs than they ever did before. They didn't get the luck of Carolina to play a crippled NJ or a garbage pretender like Washington. This WAS actually progress, as fucked up as it may seem.

This all comes from one game. We wiped out game 5 with game 6. This is all about game 7. One solitary fucking game. I'm torn over throwing everyone out and setting out on some uncertain path with brand new pieces. I'm almost sure it will go nowhere other than to a quicker need to blow it up fully, while keeping them around and again improving the depth maybe maybe maybe takes us further next year. There's no way to know. It's all risky shit at this point.
And why did you sweep under the rug these 6-1 losses ?

It was reported that the Canes wanted Knies ++ for Rantanen but the Leafs countered in the end with Marner straight up

if rantanen was willing to sign here then they should have done that. It’s easier to patch a knies on the market than a 100 pt guy.

Lastly... about JT coming back.

Sign him to a two year 5 mil per and he plays whatever role you give him and you have an agreement in place that every January /February you get injured until playoffs. just to be rested.

Getting him for less would be fine, but you need an LTIR contract that is a decent 5 mill player as opposed to the space made by Pacciorety.

I also bring patches back as well and because it would be similar.. you play him every three games in the reg season so he is ready as well for the playoffs.

Give some icetime to Cowen, Robertson

Really is hilarious how quickly the narrative online and in the hockey world in general has turned on a dime from dunking on the Leaf stars for their consistent record of failure and disappointment in the playoffs to a giant pity party for those same players who surely would ackshually be good if only they didn't have to play in front of and be pressured by those horrible, mean, terribly unfair Toronto Maple Leaf fans.
