Shanahan failed miserably here. The fact that they walked Marner to UFA without ever doing anything even though they lost the same way every year is nuts.

The kids needed leadership on the ice and off that the organization just never got them. Marleau, Thornton, Tavares, Simmonds, even Spezza, etc, none of them guys who could teach them anything other than how to get maximum respeck in the handshake line.

Does any other city/team like to do this to their team/athletes - this is just cruelty at this point.
I get it, the fans are pissed, there are no immediate answers and the media has a good couple of weeks to feast on this for clicks and likes - but if I ran a team I'd be stepping out in front of all of it and putting the heat on myself to deflect from the athletes - this is what leadership does, and it's what would make Toronto a palatable place to sign a long-term contract.

Yeah, that was the biggest failing. None of the guys they brought in ever won anything before they got here.
They're still young enough at 28 to turn it around, but they need someone to help. And literally the only someone I can think of who might be available and who's still an impact player is Crosby. I don't know what it would take to pry him out of there, other than Crosby himself deciding there's no point to any more time in Pittsburgh and wanting to accept the ultimate challenge and forcing his way out.
If we had the two firsts and Minten and Grebs that we blew on Laughton and Carlo, I might see some way.
