Does Shanny even want to come back at this point?

He's in a weird spot. Despite looking like a 65 yr old retired lesbian now, he's still only 56 which is young in lead executive years. He has to feel like he's not ready to be walked out to pasture yet, and competitive people don't really ever want to admit failure. The only reason he would walk away imo is if he legit feels that a specific other person can do a better job and he'd go out on his shield for that type of reason. He's not going to give a weird speech talking about how hard this year was on his family while looking thoroughly defeated and broken.

People like him have to be pushed out imo.

There will always be plenty of jobs available to Shanahan in the hockey world, if he wants them.

I’m not sure that anyone’s going to jump at making him the head honcho of their hockey operations, though.

Marchand knows what it takes. You have to be willing to kill a guy to win if that's what it takes.

Back in 72 when Bobby Clarke deliberately broke Valeri Kharlamov's ankle, no one was whining about "poor sportsmanship". It was war and we needed to win by any means necessary. Marchand understands this and is willing to pay the price. But most players today are guys like Marner who just want to have fun, make friends, and learn lessons.

Marchand doesn't learn lessons, he teaches them, one slash, one punch in the back of the head, one slew foot, and one face wash at a time.

If the promotion gets him out of the GM role I'm fine with it but we all know he's getting the Pres/GM gig and its just another sign that the board refuses to see the big picture
