2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

The "meddling Shanahan" stuff that dropped after Dubas was fired always seemed like bullshit from the onset.

There are different levels of meddling.

I don’t think he called Dubas and said “get that guy for our bottom 6! Pronto”

But to some extent, everyone wants to pleae their boss, so I can see a guy like Dubas (or Tre) acquiring some pieces that he knows Shanny would approve of based on hundreds of small conversations

Dubas has essentially done the same thing in Pittsburgh so I'm not convinced things would have changed much if he was boss-free. Was no excuse.

What was called "meddling" in Toronto though is super, super normal hockey front office stuff. Major moves, big contracts, etc always require the approval of senior management or the board. That's not meddling, that's standard chain of command stuff. Yeah, the board either wants a say or the President's sign off on trading one of the team's top player, or a trade involving the club's best prospect and their next 2 1st round picks, a free agent we're about to give 25 million dollars to, etc. Normal.

He seemed to have a ton of autonomy here for a rookie GM and yeah, his performance there seems to look a lot like his performance here. No one was holding him back from making genius hockey moves.

I bet money he was involved in stuff like "we can't trust Kadri anymore" and "no way we trade Marner or Nylander before their NTC kicks in" or "we can't trade Knies for Rantanen", but not stuff like "you have to sign Nick Ritchie and David Kampf."

Beyond picture stuff which is obvious… there is appeasement and compromise with smaller decisions and I think Shanny is probably responsible for some of gud pro, old school gets….

Of course I’m speculating, but aren’t we all?

I was pretty interested to see why Dubas did with the Pittsburgh roster so we could see if there were significant philosophical differences between his depth moves here and there....and yeah, I don't see it.

From talking to people inside MLSE they are pinching pennies. They have not had the success that was baked into plan and are looking to make up for it in salaries. Strategically they have removed the president role from 3 of 4 teams so far and I would be surprised if Masai wasn't next on the chopping block.
Leafs are broke?
