2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

IMO jersey retirement should be based on impact on the organization and the fan base. Not skill and points.

Thats why 17 is retired. Wendel isn't close to Marner, or Kessel or McDonald. But Wendel is 17.

Marner is one of the best players we've had. He is on his way there, but if he leaves before the job is done because he hates playing in the market...

Willy signed 8 years, loves it here, will end up retiring as a Leaf and #1 or 2 in goals and points (depending if Matthews stays). No one else will ever wear 88.

No player who hasn't won a Cup should be getting their number retired by an Original 6 franchise. I'm foursquare against the Habs retiring Price's #31 for this very reason. If you're going to act like an expansion team, expect expansion team results. An O-6 team should have higher standards.

It’s half and half no?

That said I know he hates the Habs. I’m good with that because he’s a rat fuck.
yah I think it's a split between Leafers, Habfans, and fucking Bruin fans. dunno the proportions. but I wouldn't say it belongs to any team in particular

Not petty. Goring won Cups. Tavares never won shit. He doesn't deserve to have his number retired. You should have to actually achieve things to get your number raised to the rafters. All Tavares ever was on Long Island was the best player on a dogshit team. But the Isles have won 4 Cups. They arent some flavor of the month expansion team that's never done anything.

Let Marner go to Seattle and become the greatest ever Kraken.

Goring played with the Isles for parts of six seasons where he averaged about 15-20 goals and 40-50 points per season in an era where everyone and their mother were putting up 30-goal/PPG seasons. Even in his one, highest-scoring season by a wide margin, he only finished eighth on the team in scoring.

His main claim to fame is that he played well above expectations in the playoffs during the Islanders’ first two Cups. Even then, it’s not like he was an MVP-caliber player leading the team to victory. He finished 4th in playoff scoring on the Isles during their first & second Cup runs before dropping off precipitously after that.

That’s all the reason in the world for him to be remembered fondly by the fans and more loved than John Tavares. But for a team that, as you note isn’t a crappy expansion team and has actually won, it sets an extremely low bar for jersey retirement. And he doesn’t hold a candle to any of the other guys who’ve had their numbers retired.

Looking at all that plus the timing of his jersey retirement, it’s beyond dispute that they retired Goring’s jersey not for his actual accomplishments or because he “won Cups” (if that’s all it took, the Isles wouldn’t have any numbers left). But just as a petty “fuck you” to Tavares. Which, again, I think is very funny and I fully support.
