Kind of seems like this has been a thing since day one. A burning obsession from the Marner camp with the idea that the organization and fanbase should be viewing him as the face of the franchise, not Auston.

Or at the very least, that he should be treated like the Pat Kane to Auston's Jonathan Toews. And that anything the organization gives to Auston, Mitch is entitled to as well. Whether it's AAV, contract term, bonuses or a letter.

Fuck, maybe the biggest reason they picked Tavares for the "C" all those years ago wasn't some Babcock veteran fetish, or as a result of Matthews' incident with that security guard. Maybe they knew Mitch & his people could live with him being passed over for the "C" as long as he and Auston were both wearing the same letter---an "A". But if they'd handed the "C" to Auston while Mitch had to be a mere assistant captain to him, then, Mitch & Co would have had a nuclear pisspants crybaby meltdown.

The only season he wasn't either mediocre or absolute dogshit was his first season with the Habs. Hes never come close to those numbers before or since.

 Main reason "Fucks-through-undies-dick-hole" was given the C.

Except he hasn't, as numerous people have shown us with the numbers. Matthews turns into a ~35 goal scorer, which is a significant decline from being a 60 goal scorer and he deserves the criticism that comes along with that. But Marner has literally never scored a goal in the same situation and has something like 6 assists in those 18 games which is pure side of the milk carton shit.
