2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Why do we have to blow our loads just like that? Be patient. Players that otherwise wouldn’t be available become available all the time.

No Bennett? Oh well. No JT on a team friendly contract? Boo fucking hoo.
Sign Taveres at a team friendly deal, and keep the cap space. At some point during the year, a team will have to give away a good player because of their cap space.

It happens every year

I have lunch a few times a week with my Montreal buddy on the floor (not Frenemy, much more normal, but sometimes the anti-Leaf shows). Anyway, he says Tavares hasn't lived up to the last deal (that none of the core has), but each time we talk about him, he's adamant that the Leafs would be crazy not to bring him back at around the rumored numbers, and said today he'd for sure give him a 4 year deal on the basis that he still wouldn't be ancient and a $5M 3C on the back end of the deal is no problem given where the cap is going.

Ironically here, I'm the one who's hesitant, but yeah, you have to sign that $5m x 4 and be thrilled. That's locking down 30+ goals, a C who excels at faceoffs, and yeah, $5m is peanuts. I wish Tavares wouldn't hold us up for a fourth year, but if that's what it takes to get the discount, just do it because you can't have an offseason where you lose both Marner and Tavares when you could've at least kept Tavares for way undermarket.

I think they're just trying to squeeze him as much as they can, fully knowing that he has no interest in playing anywhere else. And that's the right thing to do. They'll eventually sign him though, especially if Tavares would accept that deal. No brainer.

4/20 could be one of the best pure value deals of the summer for Tavares.

4th year, whatever who knows what the cap is then or if hes even playing or still not alergic to his equiptment

Absolutely. I wholeheartedly endorse their approach. It should be the cheapest we can get him for, and it may take till the eve of UFA period to arrive at that number. He carries some risk too if he lets it go beyond that since they could conceivably move on and sign someone else, but I think they both know that Tavares doesn't want to go and the Leafs can't replace him at the price he'll give them, and so they dance the dance for a while longer.

I still don't really get what happens at the back end of geezer deals.

Like if Tanev is in year 4 of his deal and turns into Brodie on his last year with us, what is the plan there? If he insists on playing, then obviously we either have to let him or Robidas him. But if Tanev decides to retire, he'd still be stuck on the cap because we signed him old?

Ignore the whining about the tax thing. But if true, that's not the worst deal in the world!

Duchene just signed 4/18 after not getting paid 77 million dollars by his hometown team, and putting up more or less identical production to Tavares over the last few years, same age, position, etc....Why exactly should we not complain about the taxation issue if we get a discount but not as big of a discount as Duchene gave a team he hasn't been with for 7 years, didn't just finish a 77 million dollar contract with and wasn't born in the city of?

Shut the fuck up.

I'll take both. I mean, if the concern is 1) centres & 2) how to replace John and Mitch's production with 22 million in capspace. Replacing like 75% of it with 12 million is a pretty solid start.

Oh yeah. That post isn’t meant to say I wouldn’t want Tavares back on an appropriate contract (which for me means an AAV less than $5M), even if we did bring in Naz.

Just pointing out that Naz is >> Captain Roboto.
