I can't wait to hear that Mitchy is officially going elsewhere. No matter what it will be a positive for the Leafs going forward.

Fun yeah. He's one of my favorite players ever. But it's gonna be gross to go long at a big aav for a 37 year old. Very rare to go much longer than that at an elite or semi elite level. Gio was playing top 4 caliber hockey when he got traded to the leafs. By the playoffs he was basically toast. Fell off a cliff. It happens fast.

But in saying that, I'm not about wasting a season and being shit this year. So fuck it. Grab the guy who was the best player in the NHL during the most recent playoffs.

It was actually 7.6. The holdout brought the aav down, which is a loophole I’m sure they would have rather not needed to avail to.

So they basically signed nylander to the same money that knies just got but on a 79,5m cap vs 95.5m

And to put that in context,

-Willy’s career highs were 22 g / 61 pts at the time, vs 29/58 for knies.
- willys cap hit was 8.8% vs 8.1% or 9.6% if the leafs didn’t get the benefit of the prorated holdout year.

So to get a decent deal out of willy they needed to let him sit half the year and then signed him for as much cash as they signed knies for coming off of a virtually identical season, 7 years later.

7m was worth almost 1% more at the time vs 7.75m today. And he needed to pay nylander more than 7per year in every season but the first season (when he got paid more then 7m on an annualized basis) and blow a fucking season to get that.

They did get fucked by the flat cap, but they also gave out deals no one else did. Like Rantanen signed for $1.5 less than Mitch with no NMC (which ended up being huge) the same offseason. The Leafs were the only team that paid top dollar AND didn’t get 8 years.
