2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

well if they can trade Ryan Reaves they sure as shit can trade Jarnkrok, who I don't buy as a complainer either. after all what the hell would he have to complain about exactly??

Roy and Minestrone should(?) be the start of a decent 3rd line. wouldn't it be nice to have useful bottom 6 lines? how long has it been now?

if Treliving is any kind of GM at all he'll realize it's a lot easier and cheaper to do that than it is to replace Bitch Whiner's 100 pts with an "average 1st liner" -- whoever the hell that is supposed to be. First of all do they even have the assets to land a top line player now? I think it's up for debate. If I'm an opposing GM, I'm pretty sure I'm not giving the Leafs that kind of player for a deal centering on Easton Cowan at this stage.

Yeah, trading Jarnkrok shouldn’t be difficult at all. Especially now that his bonus has been paid out and he’s only owed $775K for this upcoming season.

So every day he continues to stick around makes it more and more certain in my mind that Treliving views him as a part of the team this season and doesn’t intend to trade him. Same goes for Kampf.

I will kindly disagree

I mean, if we consider "support" players to be non top 6 scoring goals at even strength or PK....(because I'd argue that if you're getting PP time in the playoffs, you're not really a "support" or "depth" player)

in 23-24 we received 1 depth goal from Kampf. I guess we could argue about Domi's goal, but he was playing on Auston Matthew's wing....is that really a "support" player?

in 22-23 we got 2 goals from depth forwards against Florida, and 5 against Tampa...which is the high point of our depth scoring in the playoffs, ever. For comparison, Florida got 7 against us this year.

21-22, we got 4 against Tampa. This of course is the famous season where Nick Paul put us out singlehandedly in game 7 with 2 by himself. Tampa had 9 goals from depth forwards on the series overall.

and for all of the talk of the big guns going quiet in late series games, across those 3 seasons in games 5-6-7 we received literally 0 goals from any depth forward.

I was looking at more from secondary scoring or unexpected goals in a total series and not just bottom 6 forwards

One year Morgan scored 4 in the regular season and 4 in 11 playoff games

Your biggest flaw is your core failure when it matters not your support pieces , because if they dont lead the way your doomed

Barkov had 0 goals in games 4-7 against the Leafs, and 2 goals in the series. Tkachuk had 0 goals all series. Reinhart had 2 goals.

Bennet/Marchand/Luostaraunen/Verhage/Lundell scored 12 goals.

The strategy of spending half your cap on 4 forwards, surrounding them with pkers, and expecting them to outscored an entire team over 7 games clearly doesn’t work.

The core 4 deserve the blame because it’s the same shit year after year with them.

but at the same time they would have had a lot more opportunities to come through in clutch situations with secondary scoring.

Unfortunately, when you have a core 4 that chases every dollar possible, there's not enough left over to get good secondary players and you have to settle for garbage. Florida was able to have the roster they have because their tax free status gives them a bigger bang for their buck.

Difference when your team plays their nuts off and picks up the slack

Lately teams with dominant third lines win cups

There is enough money left over if your regime doesnt throw away 9 firsts at the deadline and pay the wrong support pieces

Also when your DNA is spineless no amount of money fixes anything

Leafs 2nd worst team in Dom’s offseason improvement ranking

31. Toronto Maple Leafs

Net Rating added: -13

In: Matias Maccelli, Nicolas Roy
Out: Mitch Marner

There is a gigantic Mitch Marner-sized hole in the Leafs’ forward group that remains unfilled. The Leafs badly needed a true top-six forward to fill that void, but didn’t have a lot of options to do so. What they did to get Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy was savvy and has bolstered the team’s forward depth, but it obviously doesn’t come anywhere close to equaling the value Marner brings.

Without Marner and without an adequate top-six forward replacement, the Leafs enter the 2025-26 season a lot worse on paper. They’re still a quality playoff team, but they’ve fallen outside the contending tier. Toronto is now arguably closer to the Ottawa and Montreal tier of the Atlantic than it is to the Florida and Tampa Bay tier.

Not particularly surprising. Not sure it's possible for any team to lose a Marner type to free agency and improve or come close to it. The fact that they're not last is impressive. Good job, Tre.

Who's last?
