2025-26 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

No shock there. At the bare minimum, Legault got some serious stitchery to the palm of his hand. At worse, he's going to need a lot of surgery. Either way, he's gonna be out until he can hold a stick.

Trip has been stating that Svechnikov has increased the curve of his blade and reasons that’s why Svech has been more of a presence recently. However, I have a question- is the NHL still concerned with “legal sticks” and “legal blade curves”? I haven’t seen it called in years and the last time I remember it being called was in a Caps game when Jagr was called and the refs measured the curve in the blade and said it was too much.

I heard his skating speed is up to 85th percentile in the last few games where he’s been doing better. From quite a bit lower - 40ish.

They generally measure those things in terms of quantity of sustained bursts of speed. Some of that can be attributed to getting him onto that line with Aho and Jarvis, where he's got the chance for a bit more open ice in transition than he was getting on either Stanky's line or Staal's line. Those are much more normal Hurricanes' lunch box chip and chase operations.

And I think the Canes discovered the thing about Ehlers that kept him in a secondary role with the Jets. He's much more effective speeding up a grindy line than he is triggering a more skilled line. His offense took off when he got back to being the transition pivot man on Stankoven's line. Unlike his predecessor in that role (Necas) he doesn't take it as an insult, seemingly.

I haven't seen a stick measurement done during a game in a very long time. I'm pretty sure the rule is still the same, but the new composite sticks are so different than the old wooden ones in that the curve is consistently set by the manufacturer to exacting specs for each player. So generally every stick from the manufacturer is legal and trying to change the curve much more difficult (and pointless).

A coach can still challenge a stick curve or length or alteration, but it has to be the stick a player on the ice is using. If you are wrong, you get a delay of game penalty.

Anyhow, still a rule but sticks today are mass produced to player customized exacting specifications, and all are legal from the manufacturer. Players don't alter the curves anymore apparently (or no one has been caught doing so in quite a while).
