We know that Darren Yorke is starting to attract GM interest, having interviewed with Nashville. If he leaves, I wonder if the Canes will turn their drafting strategy outside of Russia? There are somewhere around 20 Russians on the list above. None of them really stood out with a “can’t miss” season. The Canes have 26 players listed as “non-roster” players on PuckPedia. Of those, 16 are either UFAs or RFAs and of the RFAs, 4 have arbitration rights and 1, Noel Gunler, has already signed in Europe. At some point, the Russians have to make their way to North America to restock Chicago.
I think what’s going to end the Russia strategy is when they eventually sit down to do the accounts and find out that they’re wasting picks on guys who rarely hit. Thus far, they’ve been in the cycle for a number of years and have managed to produce 2 pretty good NHLers (with potential for more in one case) and 1 guy who still has potential to be a fringe NHLer (in another organization). Considering the sheer numbers of picks invested, that ain’t hitting on much, but you’d have to do a deep dive (that I haven’t done) to math out the expectations since they largely weren’t first round picks. And their best current prospects are all North Americans, barring maybe one goalie … who are all crapshoots anyway.
