2025-26 Hurricanes Prospects and Minors Thread

What’s the deal with Ivan Ryabkin? Is he the real deal?
Well, as you can see he went back to juniors after 25 games with Chicago … during which time he amassed 7 points. He’s having a huge impact as an over-age player in major junior. What that means beyond this year is entirely unclear, other than that CM is correct that he’s too good to be in the QMJHL. There were reports out of Chicago that he still had a lot of maturing to do, on and off the ice … which jives with the scouting on him before the draft last summer. So, he’s something, but anybody who tells you they know quite what is probably selling something.

Next year, I’d guess he’s back in Chicago. Or maybe he could go college hockey since the NCAA was cool to clear guys with similar AHL experience. The right college situation might do him a lot of good.

College hockey tournaments have started. Perron and Emerson are the only Canes players still alive. Michigan plays Ohio State in the final next Saturday. Michigan is the top ranked team in the country, they will get a bid even if they lose. Merrimack plays UMass next Friday in the Hockey East semis. Penn State seems likely to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when the draw is held next week, Maine is not. Does anyone think the Canes will push to sign Poirier? And if Penn St. doesn’t get a bid, will they try to sign Cerrato?

Carrato, maybe. He’s got two seasons of college hockey under his belt and took big strides this year with his point production up a bit and his PIMs way down. Carolina likes to get guys after their 2nd year at that level. Plus, he’s a big-ish body and should be ready enough for the physical play at the AHL level. Poirier is tricky. He’s short, but stocky and I’m not sure what his game looks like at the pro level. He’s got a bit more experience though, having put some time in in the Q before playing for Maine. Maybe they give him another year in the oven in college? I dunno. A lot comes down to how they see his physical development and I haven’t seen nearly enough of him to judge that. I don't think there’s a hot rush in either case though. Chicago’s got a pretty solid group up front, so any time they got this season would just be a teaser.

...and Cornell is one period away from knocking Harvard out of the ECAC quarterfinals. The semis and final are next weekend in Lake Placid.

Chicago Wolves last week:

Mar 11 Iowa L 4-2 Primeau with the loss. Nikita Pavlychev, and Nadeau with the goals.
Mar 13 @Rockford L 4-1 Primeau with the loss. Suzuki with the goal
Mar 15 Grand Rapids W 1-0 Primeau with the 28 save shutout. G. Smith with the goal.

Definitely a strange week for the Wolves. They lost those first 2 games to the bottom feeders in the Central Division and then went out and beat the AHL 2nd best team.

Chicago is now 29-15-12, 2nd in the Central division. 8 points ahead of 3rd place Manitoba. Still 20 points behind Grand Rapids

4 Games this week. Tue/Wed @texas, Sat v. Rockford, Sun v Iowa

Michigan won the Big 10 championship and Merrimack won Hockey East. Penn St. got an at large bid, so Perron, Emerson and Cerrato are still playing. The brackets will be announced later today.

Michigan is the overall #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and heads to Albany. Penn St. is the 3 seed in the same region. Merrimack is the overall #15 seed and faces overall #2 North Dakota in the Sioux Falls regional.

Chicago Wolves last week:

Mar 17 @'Texas L 2-1 Primeau with the loss. Gunler with the goal.
Mar 18 @'Texas L 5-4 Miftakhov with the loss. Legault, Unger Sorum, Slavin and Heimosalmi with the goals
Mar 21 Rockford L 4-2 Primeau with the loss. Gunler and Slavin with the goals
Mar 22 Iowa L 6-4 Miftakhov with the loss. Legault, Suzuki, Seeley and Evan Veirling with the goals

Obviously not a great week for the Wolves. They have now lost 8 of their last 9 games...the only win being a 1-0 victory against Grand Rapids.

Chicago is now 29-19-12, 2nd in the Central division. Now just 4 points ahead of 3rd place Texas and 6 points ahead of 4th place Manitoba.

3 Games this week. Wed @Iowa, Sat @Grand Rapids, Sun v Milwaukee

I think Nadeau is injured, I suspect that has a lot to do with the downturn although giving up 6 goals to last place Iowa can’t be laid at his feet.

Yeah, he’s just never gotten much traction since he came over to North America. Gunler was always a guy that was going to have to figure out how to score goals to have value and he’s just never done it. He was worth a swing, but he looks like a miss.
