2025 Canes Entry Draft Thread

Well-known member
Started a draft thread for Friday and Saturday's draft activity for everything Canes related. Feel free to update the thread title.

Canes picking 29th barring a trade of that first round pick...a few really intriguing names in and around those late 20's picks...
Danil Prokhorov, a 6'6" 210 pound monster left winger with great hands!
Will Horcoff, Shawn's boy who is 6'4" 200 LW with a nasty sandpaper and grit game and some scoring touch.
Alexander Zharovsky, a 6' 1" Russian RW with lots of offensive upside and skill.
Blake Fiddler, a 6' 4" 210 pound right shot defenseman that is a great skater and another offspring of a former NHL alum.
Vaclav Nestrasil, a Czech forward that has been rising up the draft board of late.
The two top goalies in Ravensbergen and Frolov are also there as late first round candidates.

Sounds like their will be a huge run on centers at the top of the draft board tomorrow night.

And I also think there's a good chance that the Canes end up trading their first rounder, even if it's just to move down. They don't have a 2nd round pick this year and most of this draft class slips into 2nd round value once you get past the top two layers. Wouldn't shock me to see them drop if they can pick up a 2nd rounder and a bonus pick. If they do draft, everybody seems to expect them to draft a center ... but since this is the Canes we're talking about you can probably expect them to take a value pick on whichever guy has the highest skill ceiling regardless of size or position. And a lot of teams are increasingly acting like Russian prospects are radioactive. Just sayin' ... if you're a betting person, taking a prop on Carolina picking a small, skilled, Russian wing with pick 29 is probably good value.

I hope it's a one and done on the decentralized draft idea...sounds like the feedback from all the teams is centered around getting back to a normal draft weekend with the prospects and families in the building in a host city.

I don't. I think it's a massive waste of time and resources on top of being a huge distraction for front office personnel. Let's go do some of the most important work you'll ever do as an NHL front office professional on the floor of an arena on folding tables and temporary equipment. It's just kind of silly.

I think it's the draft (and the rapidly approaching UFA window) that drives the deals and they'll happen regardless.
You put them all in the same room and they'll still be calling each other on their cellphones. Shouldn't make a bit of difference.

Not according to many GMs. Face to face is their preference.
I remember sitting in the stands at the 2004 Draft and seeing Doug MacLean coming out of a hallway back onto the floor. And Jim Rutherford was a few seconds behind. That’s when I knew the Canes had traded up to the Jackets spot and were taking Andrew Ladd at #4.

I can’t imagine what it will look like on TV, I guess like the 2020 Draft? But it just seems like such and anticlimactic event.

This draft will definite be strange to watch. All of these celebrities and former NHL players are in LA to announce the first round picks while all the teams' braintrusts are remote. The prospects will all be there, but no handshakes with the GMs or head coach.

The celebrity part isn't new of course with some teams going all out in Vegas, but still, this will be different for sure.

If you believe all of the chatter, there are all kinds of big potential trades cooking. Of course, that sounds like what we hear every morning before the draft. If there are trades to be made, the GMs will figure it out even with this format. I'm not worried about it.

All the GMs in one place breeds more deals
On that note Habsy, your Habs are circling the waters on Noah Dobson for a big deal tonight...that next contract for Dobson could be North of $10m...is that a guy you even need with Hutson and all that good young D in the system?

Well, as I've long contended ... most of them are morons. Conducting your most important and detailed business in the most chaotic environment possible is just dumb.

But do they really? Maybe some just overcome it. Chaos doesn’t make anyone more effective at anything. Almost by definition.
It does when taken in comparison. Do you handle chaos better than me type of thing. Chaos will bring out competitive instincts.

So it's some sort of survival of the fittest nonsense? Eff that. Sports has enough johnson measuring BS as it is.

So people make bad decisions because of the chaos and some people make decisions that are less bad? Seems like a stretch.
