2025 Canes Training Camp Thread

Jost I believe will have to stay on the Preds NHL roster or the Canes get first rights back on the waiver wire I believe…I like Jost as an emergency call up guy but not sure he’s ever a regular roster guy any longer.

Correct. If they waive him, the Canes can claim him back and immediately send him to Chicago.

Zach Boychuk rode that train in 2013. The Canes waived him, Pittsburgh claimed him on 1/31. Pittsburgh waived him on 3/4, I guess the Canes weren’t interested because Nashville claimed him. The Preds waived him on 3/21, the Canes claimed him. Because they didn’t claim him when the Pens waived him, he had to go through waivers again, which he cleared on 3/23. He was waived 4 times in the 2012-213 season. He was qualified for the 2014-15 season and signed his QO and was waived in October and again in January. He re-signed before a QO could be extended in the summer of 2015. He was waived in September to be sent to the AHL. The Canes did not extend a QO in June 2016 and he became a UFA. And, IIRC, when the Canes waived him the first time, Hank Clerval checked out of whichever board we were on and never came back.

Yeah, I doubt that's gonna happen. Nashville is even thinner at center than Carolina, and were forced to play Stamkos' ancient bones in the middle at times last season. Take a look at their center depth after OReilly and Haula. He'll find a spot.

Minus the minor goonery we've seen from Smith, yeah, and for FIVE more years if I recall. I know he was hurt last year, but I'd sure like to see more from him.
Yes, 5 more years with a NMC for the first 4 and a 10 team no trade list for the last 2. Yes, he has a MNC and NTC in year 5 of the contract.

The only season he didn’t miss a game was 2019-20 when he played all 71 games for Cegas. He came close the next year, playing 52 of the 56. Since then, his high water mark is 63 in 2021-22. Then 56, 39 and 43 in the next 3 years.

No yellow jerseys at practice today. KK is still missing though. So Ghost is playing his off side? Yikes!

Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis
Svechnikov - Stankoven - Blake
Martinook - Staal - Carrier
Hall - Jankowski - Robinson (Smith)

Slavin - Walker
Miller - Chatfield
Nikishin - Gostisbehere
Reilly - Legault

Andersen | Kochetkov | Primeau

Ghost doesn't defend anybody anyway ... and he's played a fair amount on his off side over the years. Walker has too, FWIW, as has Chatfield, but not well so let's just forget I mentioned it.

Seravalli says the Canes are not signing McLeod or Hart.
Well, that news and Jost getting claimed manage to simplify the roster decisions. It's down to what they do with Smith and how many of the defense group are healthy, pretty much.

Also, I can't say I'm particularly surprised by that news. As we've discussed at length, other than being a decent right sided faceoff guy, McLeod just doesn't add much. Not nearly enough to make up for the baggage he brings. And Hart's apparently going to Vegas either way, so ... yeah.

According to Sportskeeda, we’re part of an “extreme left fanbase” because some were vocal in their opposition to signing McLeod or Hart.

Luke says that his people told him "not signing for now" which means those idiots might just be waiting for the heat to die down.

All the bad will built up over a scrub.

Hart to Vegas, that market is probably the best one to not even bat an eye over the optics of the situation from the past...Hart is also the only one of the bunch that still brings the most talent player wise...after that, some spare parts and fringe bottom six guys.

Ah Jacksonville.

A. I don't think that's either a fair or accurate description of the pushback. I'd assume that's some sort of politically driven click-bait farm of a website, so ... yeah. Best ignored.
B. Your fan base is what it is, and shy of creating new fans then you have to sell tickets to the existing bunch.

Well, I did always consider Hart to be the only one of that group to be even halfway worth the hit to the goodwill of any team signing him. And Vegas has never really given a crap about goodwill in the first place.

Givani Smith survives. The Csnws signed him to a 1 year, 2 way contract, $775k in the NHL, $140k in the AHL and a $250k guarantee. I wonder what that does to the pecking order for recalls, but I guess it means if the team needs a 4th liner, he’d be recalled over Nadeau or Unger Sorum, who would be the picks for a top 9 role.

Well, the Canes have signed Givani Smith to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Smith $775,000 on the NHL level or $140,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of at least $250,000.
