Yup when all cap was absorbed and squat went the other way in a total salary dumpYet Habs & Canes were rumored to be finalists in acquiring Laine from CBJ…
I’m assuming HuGo being willing to absorb entire cap hit was the difference maker

Friedman said Canes offer was over $100M, and more than Avs offer - refusing to top Nate’s AAVyou would think Dumbdon would have if figured out before he makes a trade
It isn't a question of degree. For a team rebuilding, squeaking into the 2nd wildcard spot a year or two early is inviting needless suffering over a protracted period of time. Chasing playoff spots is the surest way to derail a proper rebuild. You claim we need to suffer, for you at least, there would be no greater pain than losing to the Leafs in the playoffs
Highly doubt Hugo is going after himFriedman said Canes offer was over $100M, and more than Avs offer - refusing to top Nate’s AAV
I suspect the offer was in the form of deferred payments, which is what Jarvis & Slavin signed last summer, since Dundon isn’t a fan of heavy signing bonus structured contracts which the Habs do without hesitation
Which is why you have been happier when we win...It isn't a question of degree. For a team rebuilding, squeaking into the 2nd wildcard spot a year or two early is inviting needless suffering over a protracted period of time. Chasing playoff spots is the surest way to derail a proper rebuild.
The suffering we need to endure is the necessary kind, as in, "not getting into the playoffs and not blowing our brains and salary cap out trying to get there".
You are trying to say that all pain is the same. It's not. And not all pain is useful. Making the playoffs and being annihilated by the Leafs is pointless suffering. It doesn't move the needle on the rebuild. In fact, it might stop the needle from moving if management becomes addicted to playoff revenue. And that's true whether it's the Leafs, the Panthers or any other team.
The suffering that we need is to not make the playoffs at all because that's the only way we can be sure that management won't abandon the plan or kid themselves into believing that the rebuild is done when it's not nearly finished. At this point in the rebuild, tanking is the way to go.
Yep. We know the Habs aren't winning anything so it's simply a question of hoping that the teams you hate most (Leafs, Canucks, Sens, Bruins) fail spectacularly. As long as the Leafs don’t get Rantanen, Nelson and Schenn then I couldn’t really care less. Hope they just overpay for Laughton and a D and then lose in 1st or 2nd round.
As for us, Zegras/Cozens would be an exciting deadline deal but that’s more of a draft deal. I only see maybe one or two trades tomorrow. Savard/Armia/Dvo out and maybe acquiring a depth forward. If they trade Savard, I think they just fill it with Reinbacher or Mailloux
I get the feeling they will hold onto Armia as an "own rental" and maybe offer him a cheap contract in summer. Dvorak I could see moved as he's the most valuable of the scrap heap now that Evans is signed. As long as the Leafs don’t get Rantanen, Nelson and Schenn then I couldn’t really care less.
