2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Nikishins dipshit of an agent is going to run this kid straight back to the KHL. And I'm not sure Nikishin has enough common sense to see what's happening. I've yet to hear this interview he did yesterday, but it doesn't sound promising.
But at the same time, let's stop pretending that Slavin sets the bar in max defense salary. Top d-men are going to be getting $9-12m a year now. Slavin taking half that is on him, not every other player looking for a contract. Let's not pretend that Miller is really $1.2 million a season, better than Slavin.

Cory Lavalette is doing another local event promoting his book about the Canes’ Cup win. This one is Saturday at 1PM at Page 158 Books, an awesome independent bookstore in Wake Forest owned by good friends of my wife and me (who also are huge Caniancs)…

If you want to play an exercise right now on the Canes top of the heap on defense in today's current market turn of events in the NHL...easily probably Slavin would be at $12m and Miller at $9 or $10 million. Thankfully those guys are locked up for much cheaper prices than that...but with Boom, the bigger question becomes do you bridge him for two years to live with a short term lower AAV or pay the price on doing that two years from now when salaries are even nuttier than today? The kid has next to no rights other than heading back to the KHL, so if you're not trading him just make the call on bridge or long term and be done with it!

I missed him at Quail Ridge, I’ll be there tomorrow.
 
Unless he turns into a pumpkin, he's going to get his 8+ from someone, at some point. If you can bridge him for $6m, and he improves, he's gone in 2 years for $12m elsewhere. If he were to get $8mx7 now, it seems highly unlikely he's overpaid in 2 years time. Him not being traded has been rumored to be one of three big reasons...no one wants to take Jerperi's contract. No one wants to pay Boom $8m right now, and no one has cap space and enough return to actually trade for him. A lot of armchair GMs seem to think he can be had for a bag of pucks and a 2nd round pick. We know that's absurd. I think 99% of the rumors out there are false. Teams like St Louis dont have the cap space without sending something huge back this way.
