It does, but I'm assuming Pelley clears the deck here. He's had almost 2 full seasons to figure out who and what everyone is now and Shanahan's contract us up in ~40 days anyway. You don't get this close to the end of a President's term without having a shortlist of replacements in mind, and job inflation in pro sports is a thing that exists now in a way it didn't when Shanahan was originally hired. If you want a top hockey executive to come now, he's a President.

It's really, really not hard to take the bones of this, clear the decks of a few of those big contracts and come back better next year. I get that a message of hope is not what anyone really wants to hear right now, which is good, because I don't have one. But as mentioned earlier, just clearing Mitch, JT, and Mo gives us almost 40 millie in cap space this summer.

There are some free agents worth looking at who can be complimentary skill and play better "playoff" hockey than our outgoing forwards (Bennett, Boeser, even Kuzmenko), there are always teams looking to move salary in the summer, maybe Marchand will come and play if we beg him hard enough, etc.

We need an enema and could easily turn over 6-7-8 players off of this team that were mostly passengers when the games got tough. I'm good with that.

Just gotta fire the idiots in the front office first. They can't be making the retooling decisions.
If getting of all that cap, if signing Marner on the relative cheap is doable, they probably should and just work around the rest. I don’t know, seems like a spiral into oblivion if he just walks. What has Boeser ever done. Bennett isn’t going to replace Marner and thensome. Hopeless fucking situation unless they make moves to position for McDavid. I don’t see this group getting anywhere with a rejiggered core otherwise.

And that makes you feel like he could do well to not already take action and having to wait two more years?! Pretty sure you were assuming he would clear the deck months after coming in based off of the info available about management back then….

I mean....Matthews was a shell of himself all year, we played a dogshit brand of hockey all year and we would have ~40M to replace outgoing players with. I'm not too worried about this not being a playoff team next year.
Pretend you add absolutely no one but lose Marner and JT. Are you missing the playoffs? Absolutely not. So losing those 2 contracts, even if you didn't replace them (which of course you would) still doesn't threaten your standing as a lead pipe cinch to make the playoffs.

Getting rid of Marner and Tavares is a no brainer. Let them walk and use the cap space on free agents who know how to win.

Any notable pres candidates out there?

Only names coming to mind at the moment are old boys like Dale Tallon.

Might make the most sense to poach someone in a GM job for a promotion to President. White in Dallas or McCrimmon in Vegas.

Shame we didn't snag Jim Nill when it was possible.

That was last year bro...yes, I was thinking he could potentially clear the decks last summer and didn't. But there's no way Shanahan has earned a contract extension. Does he upward fail the fail son to President? Again, I can't see it. He's gotta have a mandate to make changes after this shitshow.

Youre still a playoff lock whether Marner stays or goes, even if he isnt replaced. You dont need what he brings in the regular season to make the playoffs. He would only be worth keeping if he elevated in the postseason but he doesn't and he's never going to. Not in Toronto anyway. Ergo he is a waste of cap space. Let him walk.

Also, Marner is not giving discounts so "signing him on the cheap" is a pipe dream. A crack pipe dream. He will demand the max.

I want to know who Marner was yelling at. Who they thought the passengers were. I’m wondering if they could’ve possibly been aiming at Nylander.

Bergevin is available, just sayin'.

Why do we want to pay Mitch anything remotely close to his market value at all though? He's a huge reason we've underachieved in big games over the last 7 years. Small, soft, pass first/only winger who plays a style that requires him to hang onto the puck a lot. Let's just cut the cord and move on.

What has Boeser done? Not a whole lot, but the last time he was in the playoffs he scored almost as many goals in 12 games (7) as Mitch has scored in his last 49 (8). Standing at the half board and passing towards the net isn't going to win playoff series. Scoring goals does. Bennett was more valuable in this series than Marner and similar to Boeser has as many goals in his last 2 playoffs runs (13) as Mitch has in his entire career.

and we can probably get both for about the price of one Mitch. I don't fucking care how many assists Mitch gets. We've seen more than enough about how easily it is to make him go missing when the games get physical.

It's possible that adding a few of the right kind of guys could make playoff conditions more favourable for Matthews, and we get better in two ways at once. It's entirely possible the same thing is true of Mitch too, but I am happy to let other teams try that.
